as part of the providence public library presentations:
My work articulates the architecture of my own memory through alterations in collaboration with
and in juxtaposition to time. Memory is constantly altered by time, as synapses detach, memory remains,
though is lost from consciousness. I am in search of how to gracefully forget. I attempt to share the semi-forgotten
through visual language. Accepting parts of life I have involuntarily released, I thread past and present to access, to connect, and to create my own memory. My photographic works are inspired narratives dictated through stills of timethat make documentation sentimental and the potency of nostalgia seem modestly understated. These photographs become the aesthetics of tangible time, the architecture of my memory. As a photographer, I then become the architect of my own recollection.
This discussion will address the topic of photographic syntax;
the way in which contemporary photography preserves observations and offers otherwise forgotten moments a permanence in the presence. Post-modern photographic perspectives, which maintain an infinite relevance and need for the existence and evolution of the photograph; developing an understanding of what we remember and forget. Photographs offer visual perspectives of post-modern culture. In varying formats, photography renews the old; it re-observes the 'once new' as it ages, and considers what is now, fleetingly, the newest new.
This conversation is meant to encourage our understanding and desire to remember by creating a visual history that every person can share upon one glance. Photography can suspend time with visual means [digital or otherwise]. Photography, now as ever before, is aesthetic understanding of what we see/have seen/might continue to see or the absence of such.
