I'm still here in Dallas being the tech support guru for a trade show. Since the system just isn't having many problems at all, I have a lot of free time over here. Some of that time has been spent reading the local Dallas newspaper,
The Dallas Morning News.
There's an
article on the front page about a guy in prison that the parole board has voted to commute his sentence. It's now in the hands of the governor to make the final decision.
At the age of 17, Tyrone Brown tested positive for marijuana while on probation. He was sentenced to life in prison. So far he has served 17 years.
The reason for his probation was a little rough: he robbed a man at gunpoint, making off with $2. Yes, you read that right. Two dollars. The man he robbed was unhurt and has, in fact, put forth his support of Brown's release. Brown had no prior criminal record.
It's very likely that Brown will be released. The NAACP is lobbying for it and the parole board voted in favor of it. Texas Governor Rick Perry has the final say, though. We'll see.
If I had any faith in our justice system to begin with, this story would have shaken it. As it stands, this just goes to confirm that justice is really only for those who can afford it.
