Disclaimer: I in now way own Stargate: SG-1 nor the characters of Jack and Sam… But man if I did… Well, for one, I would have more than the $2 to my name.
A/N: The title comes from the song ‘She Waits’ by Zero 1 (The Hal Sparks Band) and the whole thing was written in response to a song/fic meme… I didn't follow it so I'm not posting it but if anyone wants a copy just ask!

Major General Jack O’Neill stood outside the doorway that lead into the SGC’s main briefing room. He watched as the team known as SG-1 break into laughter over something he hadn’t heard; even Teal’c managed a grin complete with an arched eyebrow.

He felt a pang of jealousy shoot through him as he watched his former team bask in the atmosphere of camaraderie as they waited for the briefing to start. As Jack watched them, his hate for his desk job in D.C. grew.

SG-1 had once been his family after the world had taken everything from him… Standing there, watching Daniel, Teal’c, and Carter laugh with Val and Mitchell like they use to with him was further proof to Jack that the universe had made him its bitch.

Another round of laughter broke out, and Jack felt his jaw clench at the lowest blow fate could hand him: a smile from Carter and he wasn’t even the one who had caused it.

None of the last ten years had managed to give them a break when it came to whatever it was between them. He had thought once his promotion had come that something would happen… Especially after the events that had surrounded Jacob’s death: Kerry, Pete, the cabin…

But no, he had been called to D.C. to attend a meeting the moment they had gotten back from Minnesota. When Jack had returned to his command, a letter requesting the transfer of one Lt. Col. Samantha Carter stared up at him from his desk.

Almost two years later and still nothing had been said or even acknowledged. An extremely fucked-up version of stalemate had been issued…

That is, until a week ago when a letter had arrived with a simple message that had meant more to Jack than he knew possible: ‘You told me ‘always;’ so why do I feel so alone?’

She had waited and he was done playing this game.
