Ah, remember Grumpy's? Too bad you weren't a little further south in Texas. There's an incredible Mexican joint in a town called Ft. Hancock that has THE BEST chicken fried steak in the entire world. No really. Nat Geo even says so.
It's called Angie's and she makes her own hot sauce fresh daily, and there's a motel so if you feel inspired to do so you can stay for her breakfast burritos and the only strong cup of coffee I've ever found in TX.
The whole town is like, the motel, the cafe, a gas station and a convenience store. That's it. It was like a scene out of a movie. But everyone was really nice and with a Mexican and a Hindu it probably counts as the most diverse town in Texas.

Ah, Grumpy's.

As for Fort Hancock (*giggle*), I'll try to remember that for the next road trip, whenever that may be. How far south? Dallas south or Houston south?
