Mr. Sun? and Books galore!

Dear Mr. Sun,
I miss you, your warmth, your bright shining glory. Come back, and make all the coldness go away. It would make me feel a lot better.

Lots of Love,
Chosho.

This is getting ridiculous. It's colder than winter. What happened to the 70 degree weather we were having a month ago? Mr. Weather, make up your mind already! Is it winter? Or is it spring?

I finished The Count of Monte Cristo! It was a pretty hard book to understand, so I had to look up the sparks notes afterwards to realize what exactly happened in a few of the really confusing parts. There were a lot of name changes that really threw me off, and also a large number of important characters, which made my head spin after a while. Maybe I should have read it a little slower. True to my expectations, it really was a fantastic story.

Nothing beats the catharsis felt when finally coming to the end of a satisfying book. This may be the longest classic I've read so far, from what I can remember. A whopping 618 pages, in fact. For me, this is a feat, since I have the attention span of an ant. My sixth grade reading teacher would have been proud. (Harry Potter really doesn't count when it comes to counting pages.)

I don't really have anything against people using sparks notes. They're useful. However, it does get on my nerves when people substitute reading an actual book with the spark notes summary of it. Doesn't it just defeat the purpose of having the book written in the first place? If you don't read the entire book, isn't it almost like you're cheating the author of their purpose in life? If I were an author, I'd think that every word in my book is important, and I'd hope that each reader would take the effort to at least absorb in the words I've painstakingly written rather than just blowing it off and reading the barebones, watered-down version that someone else wrote. It breaks my heart to see original versions of books neglected for summaries.

I read the first few chapters of Pride and Prejudice and Wuthering Heights, to decide which I want to read next. It looks like Pride and Prejudice is an easier read vocabulary-wise, so I've chosen it. Incidentally, I'll be reading these on my computer, as there are free e-book pdf versions of them that I've downloaded. We'll see how this turns out.

I've also been wanting to read Catch-22, since I've heard It's awesome, but the school library's copies are all out and I can't find it at a reasonable price. Why is nobody selling this book under 10 dollars?

That's it for today's book update.

snow!, books
