Yuki Sohma is the young man possessed by the Rat of the Chinese Zodiac in Fruits Basket. The rat is known to be the favorite of 'the god of the Zodiac' and the member of the Zodiac that is near perfect. He is calm, behaves in a very androgynous manner and it always seems like he can do no wrong, earning him the name of "Prince Yuki" from his peers.
Due to Yuki's beautiful looks and popularity, his classmates and peers fail to see how insecure Yuki actually is. As a child, Yuki is led to believe that he is the most detestable member of the Zodiac and that normal people would never accept him because he is different. He is a person that turns into a rat when hugged by a member of the opposite sex and that makes him different. Akito makes Yuki believe that he would never belong in a normal society. The first time he thought he could finally have friends; he had accidentally turned into a rat and scared his new friends. Hatori was ordered to erase the memories. Unfortunately after that experience Yuki became even more reserved around people. This insecurity of his helped develop his enviousness for people like Kyo and Kakeru. They both possessed personalities that made them able to blend in with other people so naturally and made it look so easy. It is an ability that Yuki believed was much too beyond him.
His beautiful and feminine appearance is just another curse to him as well. Despite all the compliments and admiration, it became just another of his insecurities. He especially disliked being called a girl and told that he’s cute. He believed that the fact that he looked so feminine made him very different from other people.
Still even if Yuki had all of these troubles and insecurities, he did want to change but he didn’t believe he could. He began living outside the Sohma family and enrolled himself in a co-ed school, hoping that something would change. Sadly, it did not work. He still couldn’t escape the Sohma family and neither was he able to gain the confidence to blend in with other people.
However, he did begin to slowly change upon meeting and getting to know his classmate, Tohru Honda. At the beginning of the series, Yuki felt very indifferent about Tohru but as the series progressed, she became a very important person in his life. They didn't have a romantic relationship, but Tohru became like the mother he never had. His real mother had treated him like an instrument and used him to further her status in the family. Tohru Honda showed him that she truly cared and made him see that there is someone that would always care for someone like him. It is because he cared for Tohru very much that he became very protective of her, which it is very rare. He’s not someone that will care for someone outside family.
This only shows that despite the Zodiac member's eccentric personalities, Yuki did care for each of them in his own way. Unfortunately, he didn't have a lot of experience being around other people so he didn't know how to show it or know what to do about it. He was still very reserved around them because he truly believed that he was the most hated member. He does show he cares, when he can in his own way but --- he has difficulty showing he cares to the more eccentric members of the Zodiac like his brother, Ayame.
Thankfully, this also slowly began to change with Tohru's intervention. His ability to make friends improved as well. His relationship with the members of the Student Council became better. He even became very close friends with Kakeru, the member with the personality that he disliked the most. He also started showing interest in Machi, Kakeru's half-sister.
Nevertheless only a very few people really knew the real Yuki outside the family and a handful of people he trusted. Yuki very rarely lets people into his life. He can be very teasing or sarcastic, which was very much unlike his princely image. He is also very cold and indifferent when the situation, no matter how bad, did not have anything to do with him. He isn’t afraid to bring bodily pain to those who annoy him enough, usually Kyo (who challenges him with every opportunity he gets) and Kakeru (who often calls him a girl). He cannot cook or clean and having him cook can have disastrous results, but enjoys gardening and had his own secret place somewhere in Shigure’s property.
In the end like many of the Sohma family members Yuki also hides his true self from others until he meets Tohru and finally starts to open up.

[ A very beautiful young man --- or lady it’s difficult to really tell-- appears on the screen. With soft-looking light hair and eyes, Yuki is the epitome of an androgyny.
Upon closer look, a few people will probably recognize this face. If the person has met and been a victim of Ayame’s teasing, the more you look at him --- the more familiar he becomes, except he seems younger and a lot more reserved.
Yuki tries to smile just to be polite but it’s obviously forced. If a person is observant enough, they will notice that Yuki’s actually quite annoyed. ]
Hello, residents of Asgard …
My name is Yuki Sohma and I am looking fpr people that may belong to where I come from. I’ve heard that I may not be the only person with the name Sohma here.
If you have any information of where I can find them, please contact me. It’s urgent.
[ His pleasant , almost business-like smile suddenly becomes cold before he continues. Is that a tired sigh?]
If this person however is named Ayame, I ask you to not under any circumstances tell him I am here. Tell him anything. Just do not tell him I am here yet.
[ Sorry, brother. He doesn’t really believe he is ready to handle your insanity yet. ]

Yuki was confused --- but he was trying to hide it well. When he woke up and didn't find himself in Shigure's familiar Japanese style house, he instantly raised his guard. He had to admit that this prison was beautiful. He couldn't deny that, but he couldn't appreciate it. Hearing a sound, he turned when the door of the room open. To his surprise a faceless person person greeted him.
"Who are you?" Yuki asked.
She introduced herself as the maid and much to Yuki's appreciation, she gave him a bit of information of why he was here. It wasn’t enough to stop him from growing increasingly angry when she told him that he couldn't go back home. Strangely, she presented him with three things: a letter, a map and a bracelet.
Yuki was instantly suspicious and politely tried to decline. He couldn't feel any maliciousness coming from her, but he thought it was unwise to accept anything until he understood more of what was going on. She was however very insistent. After a few minutes of her insisting, Yuki finally gave in and put the bracelet on and began reading the letter.
Odin.
It was a familiar name. He had read that name before when he was reading about the Norse gods.
Always polite, Yuki turned to look at the made and uttered a polite thank you. On the outside, it almost looked like Yuki was very accepting of his situation. He wasn't panicking and neither did he appear to be angry. On the inside, he was more than frustrated. It seemed he would never be free of gods. Back home, there was Akito and here in this new world he was expected to serve another god.
After the maid finished explaining about the communication device, he thanked her and quickly excused himself, not wishing to be in that room for much longer. It felt like a beautiful prison and he has had enough of those.
At the moment, he was really quite at a loss of knowing what to do. The best he could think of was go to the city and look around for information. He didn't know what he hoped to find by doing so, but maybe some part of him did hope that the maid was wrong and there was a way home.
Home. Back to the curse of the Zodiac.
Did he want to go home?
He pondered over that for a while, but he knew that he did. After all, there was now at least one person back home that he knew would be looking for him and waiting for him. She would worry and he didn't want her to worry. He had to go back home, because Tohru might be waiting.
