[Dominic's silent for a moment, trying to understand what just went on. He saw it, yes, but the feeling--]

You...

[Javert is none the wiser to the new 'surprise' Somarium placed in his particular dream. So, with forced patience after reliving such a significant moment in his past life, he meets this young man's gaze - Dominic - and grimaces. Good god, if that is pity in his eyes...]

What is it?

[It isn't quite pity or sympathy. Right now, Dominic doesn't know how to feel. There's something he needs to confirm before he says anything else, anyway.]

... That was a memory?

So. Of course most of you would wonder. I have heard it a common event, here.

[There's an odd tic in Javert's cheek, and briefly his gaze flickers skywards, but otherwise his expression is unchanging. He leans forward and rests his chin on the back of his massive hand.]

Yes. For the most part. Anything else?

[Dominic doesn't know what to think of that.]

Then you killed yourself.

[He grimaces, but with a dry upward curve to the corner of his mouth. It was almost a grin.]

I completed my business very concisely, yes, I confess to that.

[For whatever reason, something about that annoys Dominic. Maybe it's the cold way the man puts it: "business"--like it didn't even mean anything.]

Why did you...?

[The grimace becomes a sneer.]

Don't hold back, do you.

[He glares at Dominic coldly, his thin lips pursed. He shifts almost imperceptibly in his seat.]

It was the better of two possibilities.

[Javert's expression doesn't bother him. He's used to it, and besides, he didn't get to where he was by being so easily intimidated.]

How was killing yourself the better possibility!?

The only possibility!

[He corrects Dominic with a clipped sharpness to his tone, his face white. Yes, it was the better path, but it was also not possible to take the other option and feel morally sound. It meant placing a good man behind bars, something he was too depraved to carry through. His patience is just barely contained.]

Is there more to this interview?

[Even though he can still remember the emotions from the dream--how he could feel them, he doesn't know--he just can't empathize with Javert. Although he doesn't regret the decisions that led to his own death, he wouldn't have chosen them if there was a better way.

He's silent for a moment.]

No.

[Javert scowls deeply and examines Dominic's face in tense silence. Curse these damn tiny windows! They are hardly enough to work out a satisfactory level of detail in a correspondent. The Inspector could see that the gears were turning in some fashion, but he couldn't figure out exactly what the hell Dominic was thinking. He slowly sits up in his seat and clasps his hands atop his desk.]

Then leave me be.
