It had only been a few days but Sam’s condition had already dramatically improved; his cuts were healing, he could actually breathe without being in pain and sitting up was no longer a problem. The gash of his forehead still looked just as bad and the doctors said it would most likely form a scar. Sam’s mother had returned to the hospital the day after they left, he barely saw her because she simply spoke to the doctor that had treated Sam and left.
Finn stayed with Sam, not even leaving the hospital to change, ignoring the boy’s pleas that it would be okay if he left for a couple hours. Mrs. Hudson had picked up a load of Sam’s stuff from his house, preparing for him to move in with them in a few days when he gets released.
Although the smell was getting pretty ripe, Sam was getting used to having Finn around - it helped with dealing with the lack of parents. He had a few breakdowns here and there, especially when his mom didn’t bother to even see him on her short visit, but Sam was starting to deal with the fact that his parents just needed time. He was also being forced to deal with the idea of going back to school in a couple weeks, Sam didn’t know if he could face everyone after what happened. Everything felt different know he was out, willing or not.
“Hey Sam!” Sam’s glazed over eyes flicked to the door to see Santana standing with a large basket in her hands. This would be the first time he’s seen her since the whole mass slushing incident. “Figured you’d need a little pick-me-up, so Brittany and I decided to make you this.” With a smile, Sam noticed what the basket was made up of once Santana set it down. The basket was filled to the brim with Avatar’s figures.
“Santana…” Sam sat up, refraining from jumping with glee because of the nerdy excitement taking over his body. “This is amazing, how could you afford all of these?” He picked up a Jake Sully figure, smiling at it adoringly.
“Well, I can’t take all the credit.” She sat down in the seat Finn normally occupied; he had gone to get them some lunch from the cafeteria. “We all bought you one, the glee club that is. Puck’s on his way with the rest.”
Sam sat in shock, not being able to form words to thank Santana (and the rest of the non-present glee club). “Wait? There’s more?” Sam laughed.
“You’ll see.” Santana smirked. “Now, how are you doing? And don’t give me that ‘I’m fine’ crap, really…”
He didn’t really know how to explain it, but he felt empty. Sam felt bare, as if he had nothing - when he knew full well that he really had a lot more than he could have ever hoped for. At first he blamed the hospital, the death around him didn’t help with moral at all, but it wasn’t that - the lack of his family affected him more than he could’ve realized.
“I don’t know, Santana.” Sam’s smile faded. “I’m tired; I’m sore - everywhere, and I… I miss my family”
“I get it, getting hit by a truck aside, I know what you mean.” Santana stood, taking his hand with a smile. “For lack of better words, it gets better.”
“You’re really not as bad as people think, are you?”
“Shh.” She sounded, laughing a little. “Don’t you dare tell anyone, okay?”
Laughing, Sam eyed Finn walking back to his room with plates closely followed by Puck who had a gift bag in hand. They were talking to each other, something Sam never expected, and then they laughed with each other. Whatever had happened, Sam was grateful there wouldn’t be anymore tension.
“Hey Santana!” Finn placed the food down on the table, greeting her with a hug.
“Geez. Finn!” Santana pushed him back lightly, pulling a sickly face. “When was the last time you showered?”
“Yeah it’s getting kind of stinky in here, dude.” Puck agreed, joining in with the laughter.
“I keep telling him to go home and shower but he refuses.” Sam chuckled, sitting up straight and bumping his good fist with Puck’s outstretched one. After everything, Puck was the last person Sam expected to be there for him but here he stood with a smile and a gift like nothing had happened.
Taking the gift bag from Puck, Sam pulled out two tickets to a 3D screening of the extended edition of Avatar. “Dude! How did you even get these? They stopped showing this!” Sam’s face had lit up, having missed the extended edition in theatres.
“Let’s just say I know the guy who owns the theatre and I made a special deal that I’d clean his pool for free for 2 whole months.” Puck smirked. “But you can’t tell anyone, he’ll get his ass sued if anyone finds out. It’s the least I could do, you know, after everything.”
“Dude, are you sure? That’s like a lot of money!” Sam sat, staring at the tickets, only flicking his eyes up a couple times to glance at Finn’s excited face, and Santana’s approving expression. “Thanks, man!” Sam smiled at Puck’s dismissive wave as he attacked the plates of food Finn had provided.
“Puck, we should go.” Santana stood, pulling the boy away from Sam’s food. “There are only so many times we can miss Glee. We’re preparing for Sectionals.” She explained. “Berry’s singing ‘I See You’ from your smurfs film, and we have to be there to watch adoringly as she does. We’ll see you later, lips.”
“Tell her to break a leg.” Sam smiled.
“I just may break one for her.” Santana laughed, dragging Puck out the door who only managed a wave after stuffing his face with half of Finn’s food. Sam couldn’t help but smile, he never imagined people could be as kind to him once they all found out.
Finn sat back down in his seat, picking at the remaining food Puck left on his plate. “You’re cute when you smile like that.” He spoke, grinning at the blonde’s dorky expression as he observed the figures.
“You mean I’m not cute all the time?” Sam joked, putting the toys down and began to eat the salad Finn got him. Lord knows hospital food sucks but if Sam wanted to retain at least some of his muscle, he had no choice but to eat. “Finn, you really should go home.” Sam observed the way Finn’s face contorted as he tried to sneakily smell his clothes. “It’s not like you’re leaving me, and I can just sleep while you’re gone.”
“I’m fine, Sam.” He lied. “I said I wouldn’t leave, so I’m not.”
“Finn, I love you but you really do stink and I want the ability to smell when I get out of here… And you can get me some real food while you’re gone. I haven’t eaten Doritos in almost a week and I think I’m going through withdrawal.”
Finn replied with a laugh, knowing he probably should go for just an hour to clean himself up. “Okay, I’ll go but only because you’re so disgusted by me.” Continuing to laugh, he stood and stepped to Sam’s bed and kissed his cheek. “I’ll be right back, okay?” He spoke seriously.
“Don’t forget to shave.” Sam giggled as Finn left with a pout on his face.
Returning to the salad with a disgusted face, Sam put the plate back on the table along with Finn’s plate before lying back down to sleep.
Parental drama aside, Sam couldn’t help but be happy. He had Finn, and everything that supported him, behind his back and they would do anything for him. He didn’t deserve it, especially not from Puck, but he would never refuse it. He needed all the help he could get once he got back to school.
Sam just wished his parents would come around; he missed them more than he thought he ever could. He couldn’t remember the last thing he said to his mother, or the last time he even saw his little siblings. It wasn’t normal for families to live like this.
Lying down on his side, making it easier for him to breathe, Sam let himself drift off knowing the faster he slept the quicker Finn would be back with him.
