You would think Chord Overstreet would be a little embarrassed by his derriere-related nicknames on the set of Fox's "Glee," but the newest member of the musically inclined cast seemed kind of proud of them.
"Lea (Michele) and Amber (Riley) call me 'New booty,'" Overstreet said of his co-stars while sitting in a classroom at the Chicago Academy for the Arts (1010 W. Chicago Ave.) on Saturday. "You can print that. Cory (Monteith) calls me 'Hella-booty,' because he thinks I have a great booty."
(For you non-"Glee" fans, Monteith plays the show's varsity jacket-wearing jock.)
Overstreet was making an appearance at the local auditions for "The Glee Project," an Oxygen network reality show that will give its winner a multi-episode guest spot on "Glee." He said the nicknames come with the territory for a newbie. At least he understood the booty jokes - unlike many of the other jokes he was hearing on the set at first.
"Everybody had these inside jokes and stories you're not a part of," Overstreet said. "They went on tour. They'd been together 2 1/2 years. It was like, 'Oh yeah, I know what you're talking about. … Wait, no I don't.'"
When he was a teenager, which wasn't all that long ago for the 21-year-old actor, Overstreet said he would travel to Chicago to model for Gap and Famous Footwear ads. More recently, he spent his time auditioning for roles in Hollywood and writing music (his dad, Paul Overstreet, co-wrote Kenny Chesney's hit "She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy").
There is far less time for writing these days. The cast - notorious for being one of, if not the hardest working cast on television - sometimes clocks 12-to-15-hour days.
"Thank God (choreographer) Zach Woodlee has had all the patience in the world for me and my dancing," Overstreet said. "Me and Cory aren't the most talented dancers."
Overstreet plays transfer student-turned-football player Sam Evans, who joined the glee club after he was discovered singing in the locker room shower. As a result of the role, Overstreet has seen his star rise quickly, from being included in People's "Sexiest Man Alive" issue to being linked to Rumer Willis in the tabloids in October.
Still, he said: "I don't have to worry about paparazzi. They don't watch the second season of shows."
