Just a quick peek

I've been struggling with this kiln for a while, it won't hit 1300C, preferring to hover at 1250-1280. Of course the real goal is not a temperature, but a certain level of heat work called Cone 10, which often happens around 1300. It can be achieved with more time at a lower temperature if it comes to it. And it's come to it.

I had to go out last night, so Dave was charged with cone watching. 7 and 8 were already down, and the kiln was actually gaining heat. But no, it pooped out, and the 9 and 10 cones were resisting. It was 6pm and the neighbors were all home using more electricity, and Dave says that makes a difference. At some point he turned it off.

So what happened? Is is salvagable? I have until Tuesday to get the commission delivered, so I could refire if I have to.

Soft 10. Glaze spots on the shelf from a previous firing. I'll angle grind them off soon.

The rutile blue didn't pop, but the commission mugs haven't got any, and it's generally hotter at the bottom of this kiln anyway, which is where they are. It'll be a few hours before I know for sure about the lower levels. These top ones might get to go for another ride. Or not. I'll decide later.

This might be why I'm doing more game pieces and stuff. I only have to hit 1050-1100 for those.
