DD:! This is my first time writing Jade, or Guy, for that matter~ Sorry if I messed them up.

Where there's smoke, there's fire.

That first night in St. Binah, Guy felt uneasy. It was his first time back to the city in 15 years, but something about what Jade said that day was troubling him. It was clear that in his current state, he was not getting any sleep, so he decided to go out to the garden to clear his head.

“I remember Pere and I planted these flowers... one for each person we knew..” He whispered, as he gazed at the moonlit flowerbed.

Suddenly, he heard what sounded like a boot on cobblestones, followed by a deep voice.

“Curious, isn't it?” Guy jolted up at the sound of the voice. “Wha- Jade? What are you doing here?”

“Nothing,” he replied calmly, “I can't seem to catch any sleep. I suppose you're having the same problem?” He walked over to where Guy sat and stood above him, looming.

“Y-yeah.” Guy attempted to regain his calm, but something about Jade's presence always stirred him up.

There was a moment of silence, and then Jade spoke up.

“Like I was saying, these flowers are very curious.” Guy didn't bother looking up. Jade was probably going to either make a snide remark, or show off some of his knowledge.
“I'm no botanist, but don't you wonder why these flowers only grow here, in St. Binah, and nowhere else in all of Auldrant?”

“Isn't it because of the Soil Tree?” Well, there would be no harm in humoring him, Guy supposed.

“Hm. Maybe. I've met with McGovern a few times about it, and I have my theories... But the likeliest one seems to be that these flowers were in fact brought here from somewhere.” Jade spoke in one solid tone, but if Guy had looked up at him, he'd have seen the smirk rising to his face as Guy twitched slightly.

Guy then chuckled, trying to hide the nervousness in his voice. “Didn't you, yourself, say that these flowers don't grow anywhere else on the planet? Where would they be from?”

Jade smiled. Guy had taken the bait. Jade bent down and looked into Guy's face, which looked very serious as he was not backing down. That stern look only increased Jade's sadistic amusement.

“Why, from a place that isn't on Auldrant. Not anymore, anyway. From, say... Hod.”

Guy's eyes went wide for a second before he turned away from Jade's stare. His voice was begging him to hesitate, but he would not let Jade get the best of him. Hope was not lost yet.

“From Hod? That's ridiculous.” Jade chuckled as he saw how Guy's frame had begun to shake. He stood up once more to drive another nail in the casket, but not before allowing Guy a small pause to contain himself.

“Have you noticed, Guy,” he emphasized, “that these flowers all have one thing in common? They're beautiful, yes, but one thing strikes me as odd. So, did you notice what it was?” He inquired almost teasingly, though with him it was hard to tell.

Guy wanted, above all things, to get out of there. To stand up, leave, and ignore that the night ever happened. In fact, he cursed the thought that brought him out here in the first place. He was not about to answer, but he could not just walk away.

“These flowers, they're all... Gaillardias.”

Guy completely froze at the mention of his name. He felt his skin go cold. How? He had been so careful all this time. How was it, that in these few days he had been traveling with this older man, Jade had already seen through 15 years of hard work?

Jade, who seemed to have an inert sense at other's torment, began to chuckle as he walked away, leaving Guy completely thunderstruck.

“Someday, Guy, you'll have to tell me more about yourself. Until then, there's something you should know. Tracing a fire isn't hard when there's so little smoke.”
