This book is about the friendship of six women over a forty year time span.  Five of the women are married to American Air Force officers in the fifties and one of the women is an Englishwoman.  The book shows how five of the women start out as housewives and then grow as people over the years.  One of the characters is a childfree, unmarried woman whom the other women assumed was married at the beginning of the book.  The downside of being the wife of an Air Force officer is also shown as well, where the wives couldn’t get jobs outside of the home.  With one of the children you see the downside of having the children seeing their mom being dependent on a man for their basic needs.  Some of the marriages don’t end the way that you expect them to, even the one marriage that lasts over forty years has a surprise in it.  At the beginning the American women are exposed to another way of life when they meet their English friend Kath Pharaoh.
