Grumpy Old Composers

The Beethovenfest was interesting last night. I'd heard none of the pieces before. I liked those in the first half, but Paul didn't. The second half was a Mass, and didn't do much for me. Which is a pity, because aside from one short bit at then end of the first half it was the only piece involving the choir. And I like a good choir. And a friend was singing in it, so I felt a wee bit obliged to like it.

Well, you can't like everything a composer wrote, and it was interesting to read in the program that the Mass was a very un-Beethoven rather Hadyn-like piece old Beety did as a commission. Sort of like a tie-in novel, maybe, but instead of it being for a tv series it was for a religion.

The guy next to me was so into the music, he kept rocking the chairs with his tapping, and making little happy grunting noises. Made me a little envious, actually. It must be great to get that much of a buzz from music. In a way it was a bit off-putting, too. Made me feel inadequately appreciative.

Oh, and one of the women in front of me was wearing so much perfume my eyes were watering.

But it was a fun night anyway.
