Candy Review
VALENTINE DOTS

It seems that Tootsie Roll is intending to produce a holiday-themed version of Dots for every holiday on the calendar. First, there was the veritable Dots cornucopia at Halloween. Then, there were the Christmas Dots. Now, of course, we have Valentine Dots. (I just wonder when they will get around to doing something for International Talk Like A Pirate Day.)

The box describes the Valentine Dots as "Cherry, Vanilla, & Passion Fruit Flavored Gumdrops." Now, this might lead you to believe that there are three different types of gumdrops in the box. And you would be wrong. There are two different gumdrops in the Valentine Dots -- cherry and vanilla, and passion fruit and vanilla.

Physically, these are the same basic shape as the other varieties of Dots -- squat, truncated cones. The passion fruit Dots are a translucent pink, and the cherry Dots are a translucent red. Both have a vanilla layer at the base that is an opaque white.

The vanilla layer on both flavors has a somewhat mild vanilla flavor, but it is definitely present. You know that it is present, but it doesn't try to overwhelm either of the other two flavors. Instead, it blends with both the cherry and passion fruit flavors, harmonizing with them. (And I wish that English had a word that described such a blending of flavors.)

I think I may have mentioned this once or twice in other reviews, but I don't think I know what a real passion fruit tastes like. I don't think I have ever eaten one. About all I can say about the passion fruit/vanilla Dots is that there is a definite fruit flavor there. I just don't know how much it tastes like a real passion fruit. (Strawberry or raspberry might have been a better choice -- more recognizable, at least -- but the people at Tootsie Roll didn't consult me.)

On the other hand, I do know what a cherry tastes like. And the cherry/vanilla Dots do have a somewhat decent cherry flavor to them. And the combination of cherry and vanilla is a pretty good one -- why else would we have Cherry Vanilla ice cream?

This is, of course, a holiday-themed release, so the standard holiday disclaimer applies. It will probably disappear not too long after Valentine's Day, but it will probably resurface in about 10 to 11 months -- right after the Christmas candy starts getting pushed aside to the clearance shelves.
