Flashpoint : Grounded

This was an okay episode. There were bad guys, there were hostages, there was Spike and Ed crawling round in the hold of a plane. It was fine.

But. My absolute favourite bit? Ed and Sam and Raf right at the end.

The thing about Ed is, he's really not stupid. Sometimes he does stupid things, true, but once he's realised it was stupid that's it.  Ignoring my issues with the whole Sophie-leaving-Ed storyline, it's the perfect example. We, the viewers, already knew that Sophie was pretty much the centre of Ed's world. (Remember the episode with the messy divorce when the mother tries to take the kids and run?  Greg asks Ed, "What would you do if Sophie left and took Clark?" Ed's response is, basically, "I don't understand the question.")  The problem was that Sophie didn't know.  I would be willing to bet that now Ed knows she didn't know, she will never have reason to doubt it again.  He doesn't make the same mistake twice.

The reason I love the bit with Raf is because he's not going to let Raf make his mistakes either.  In the first episode, when someone asks Ed how he is, he says he's fine.  When Sam and Ed ask Raf how he is in this ep, Raf says he's fine. And I thought, New Guy, I want to like you but it's hard. And then Ed says yeah, you are, but give it an hour and you won't be.  And we'll be here, because you're our team mate and our friend and it's our job to be here until you actually are fine. And Raf thinks about it for a second, visibly realises that maybe he's not fine and he doesn't have to pretend to be, and says, that'd be good, thanks.

As for Sam, he's come a long long way from the idiot rookie.
