In my impossible-to-contain excitement over our upcoming trip to China and Tibet, I'll randomly be posting photos of the places we intend to visit. I like to learn about the places I visit before I go- it just makes each new place that much more interesting! You're invited to learn along with me. This is Yangshuo:

Yangshuo is in Guanxi Province, located
here.If you've seen the recent Edward Norton film, The Painted Veil, you've seen parts of Yangshuo. It's a small town outside of Guilin, with classical Chinese scenery such as terraced rice paddies and odd-shaped mountains. It's a great place for hiking, biking, and soaking up rural China without having to hire a private driver to take you too far away from a large city.
I just discovered that the famous director Zhang Yimou (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, among many, many other films) has created an outdoor show on the Li River in Yangshuo that employs over 600 actors on bamboo reed boats. The show is called "Liu Sanjie" meaning Third Sister of the Liu Family, and is based on a famous Chinese folk tale about a young woman who loved to sing and the only way she could be with her lover was if they turned themselves into larks.
Interesting. So, that's Yangshuo in a nutshell!
