"All right, pupils, today we're going to learn something new." Katara grinned in anticipation as she watched the children's faces light up at the prospect of a new move. "But it's probably not what you're thinking of." She nearly broke into giggles as their faces fell in disappointment, as one.
"I learned this, in fact, by watching the Blind Bandit. You're probably all confused as to how I learned earthbending even though I am a waterbender. You see, if all of you learn exclusively waterbending moves your fighting will grow rigid and stale, therefore making you predictable to anyone who has simply studied the techique.
"If you incorporate moves from all of the elements you will be more fluid, more formidable as an opponent." She clapped her hands. "The first part is simple; it is called the horse stance. With a more solid stance you will be better prepared to face anything any adversary throws your way, head on." She demonstrated, and watched her pupils attempt to replicate the move, weaving through them and fixing any errors. A sudden familiar voice made her head snap up to the front of the group in rapt attention.
"I always knew you were unorthodox, Master Katara; but earthbending technique? I'm impressed." An old man dressed in the traditional blue parkas of the Water Tribes came striding forward, nodding at those whose form was correct, and correcting those who were off.
"Class, say hello to Master Pakku," Katara called, and smiled as her class responded in unison. She hugged him briefly and asked why was he here, no his company was most appreciated.
"Yugoda needs to see you this morning, before you become too exhausted to work with," he replied.
"But.... the class...?" She trailed off uncertainly.
"I'll take over from here." A corner of Pakku's wrinkled mouth quirked up in a half-smile. "I've fought enough earthbenders to know the horse stance, and a few others besides. Go, she's already waiting in my apartment."
After bidding goodbye to her class, Katara wiped her face off on the corner of her tunic and pulled her parka over her head as she hurried up the walkways to her grandfather's abode. When she arrived, Yugoda was there as Pakku had said. She sat at the low table, various bottles in a line in front of her as well as glassware scattered about.
"What is all this?" Katara asked her friend and former teacher.
"Katara," Yugoda smiled conspiratorially, "this morning you are going to learn an art that has been around as long as time itself. It is regarded as the 'women's scheme' because only women are sneaky enough to pull off such a feat, and the time has come for you to learn as well.
"Today, you are going to be instructed in the arts of poison."
A/N: I know, I'm still leaving much in the dark. But I didn't have much time to finish; I have to leave for work in ten minutes.
