i picked it up.
this has been a lifelong dream of mine
the conversation went as follows:

me: "HI!!!!"
mexican: "Hello, whos this?"
me: "Sherri!! You called a payphone!!!!!!"
mexican: "What?!? Oh shit!!!"
me: "Bye!!! Have a nice day"

I completely concur with Amanda. Except if a payphone rang and I picked it up I'd be afraid it would be like in the movie Speed and a terrorist would have strapped explosives to a bus and it'd be up to me to fix everything. Keanu Reaves and Sandra Bullock did okay, but I'm not sure I'd be up to it.
