I'm getting a very strong Cloud vibe from you. My first thought was Squall, but I think the way you describe yourself fits Cloud's character as he develops in the game better. Your positive/negative adjectives really seem to describe Cloud for me (except the bit where he's being a jerk of a mercenary). The negative attributes in particular - I think Cloud is very aware of what people think of him, because of the fact that he got bullied as a child, and he's pessimistic and self-recriminating enough for him not to tell Tifa and co. when he came down with Geostigma, because he thought he'd be a burden. It is consideration and being respectful of someone's feelings, in a way - it's quite unfortunate, then, that he misread things and that he's so outright stubborn, which I guess fits in with your 'inflexible' adjective.
Your 'not a natural leader but not a follower' either really reminds me of him. He's not the sort to step up to a leadership position; he'd rather follow people, but at the end of FFVII everyone's following him. Including Tifa, and he used to follow her as a child. "They'll never be expendable to me. I hate losing someone I love." is another statement that reminds me of his relationship with Aerith - he was obviously very hurt by her death, and I think well into the game she's still, in a way, his motivation. Your comment about the world being beautiful is somewhat FFVII as well; there's a lot of pretty places in FFVII but the uglier locales have been made so by human hands. Like Midgar.
You also mentioned you'd be working for someone, which actually does fit Cloud at the start of the game, because he's functioning as a mercenary employed by AVALANCHE. How you mentioned you wouldn't underestimate the villain's power kind of reminds me of Sephiroth - Cloud used to admire Sephiroth, and he's seen Sephiroth fight before, so he definitely wouldn't underestimate Sephiroth's power, especially not by the time Advent Children rolls around. All you get is someone focused on that final villain battle, who's doing it because he cares about something, and I think that suits your application rather well.
