As self-sacrificial as she is (as all the summoners in FFX are, really), she's willing to stand up for her friends and she's willing to fight back when necessary - for example, the time when she was kidnapped by Al Bhed? While her guardians do bust the place down looking for her, by the time they find her, you see a bunch of groaning Al Bhed and a completely unhurt Yuna, who admits that she did hurt them. A little. So she's more than willing to act in self-defense, and she isn't helpless, either, despite her wanting to work with her friends as a team the way you said you do. (:
