“Chuck, why did you do that?”
Why? He almost laughed. But it was hard, when it felt like your soul was being torn into shreds.
It was simple really. It was because he loved her. Because he would die a thousand deaths than see her eyes cloud with hurt again, because he would have his heart shattered into a million pieces than have hers break into two, one more time. And so he had let her go. He would take the pain, and it would stop her tears.
He wanted to be the hero of his story, just this once.

They say that every man is the hero of his own story. But when she looked at him, the man she had lost her heart to, the boy she had given her everything to, she had hoped that he would prove them all wrong.
She had tracked him down to the ends of the earth, the ends of his world, and dragged him back from the brink. But now, she was unravelling. And damn it, just this once, she had wanted him to be the hero of her story.
But he had proved her wrong instead.
