stargateanon "Rodney, you can't do this!"
"Of course I can, it's my right-"
"It's my dog!!"
"Well, your dog bit me!"
"You don't know it was my dog!"
"Of course I do, I'm a genius."
"Geniuses can be wrong."
These were the words that woke him every night, they were the reason he spent most evenings working on a project that could easily be assigned to any one of his scientists. He didn't even know if they were a memory or merely a dream and he had no way of finding out.
"You know Rodney, " he heard in the lab one night, "they say people can use their love-handles while they sleep."
"Yes, well, most people don't have the future of not one, but two galaxies in their hands. Wait," he snaps, finally shifting his gaze from the computer and towards the doorway where Sheppard stood, "did you just call me fat?"
"Let's go McKay," Sheppard tilting his head back a bit, "you need your beauty rest."
" 'Cause you should now I'm well under the recommended weight limit for a man my height, and stop trying to distract me from my work," Rodney answers, already turning back to the computer. "What are you even doing walking around Atlantis at this hour?"
"My job."
"See, your doing the same thing I am."
''No, actually I'm not. I was asleep before my rounds and I'll go right back to sleep now that I've finished them."
"Oh."
"Yes 'oh'," Sheppard says, walking up to Rodney's desk. "Come on, I'll walk you to your room; I'll even tell you a bed time story if you need it," His voice amused and caring in a way he never hears from anyone else and that makes him look up to see tired eyes filled with concern.
"O.K. fine," Rodney snaps, saving his work and powering down his laptop. "But only because I have the sinking feeling you idea of a bedtime story is an animated and overly detailed retelling of your 'Hail Mary' gamy."
"You know you love that game."
"Whatever," he mumbles back.
"You ready to leave?"
"No." He gets up anyways.
"Come on Goldilocks, let's see if we can find you a bed."
"You live to torment me, don't you?"
"It's the highlight of my day."

"I'm always right."
"No you're not. You're the stupidest person, EVER!"
"Oh please, stupidest isn't even a word."
"It is so a word and you're it."
"That doesn't even make sense!"
"It does to."
"Does not."
"Does to!"
"It so does not!"
"Rodney!"
"What!" He snaps his head toward the loud voice and finds himself looking at Sheppard across the conference table.
"I don't know what thoughts run through that head of yours, and normally I don't really care-"
"Hey-"
"BUT, would you like to share with rest of the class why you don't think it's a good idea to explore the city?"
'Um..." he looks around and hopes he doesn't look as lost as he feels. " Because it's dangerous?"
"You would, of course, have a full Marine escort with you." Elizabeth manages to not sound like she's stating the obvious and he wonders if he's the only one who thinks it really is that dangerous to explore the city.
"Yes, and that's worked so well for us in the past."
"Do you have another option in mind?"
"As a matter of fact I do. We send the MALP." Rodney's grateful he's always been able to bullshit his way through anything.
"You want to send the MALP to explore the city?"
"Really Colonel, you say that like I'm keeping you away form your toys. All I'm suggesting is we send the MALP to the unexplored areas ahead of any live-action personnel to make sure there aren't any alien goths, half ascended beings, deadly viruses, doppelgangers , or anything of that nature hiding in the city."
He could see Elizabeth thinking about it.
"That does seem like a reasonable proposal," she finally says. "Are there any objections?"
"There aren't any left."
"What?"
"Chocolate bars. There aren't any left. Those kids took them all."
"Oh. Here, you can have mine."
"Thanks!"
"My name's Alex."
"I'm Rodney."
"Nice to meet you Rodney."
"Yeah, thanks."

"Dad! DAD!"
He couldn't tell the difference between reality and fantasy anymore.
"Idiot! He was complete idiot. He should know better."
Time had no meaning.
"Jeannie says I'm stupid."
His mind felt like a wave upon an endless sea, swelling and crashing and never touching solid ground.
"You can fix him right? You can get McKay back to normal?"
There were places in which he wanted to touch the shore.
"Well, tell her you're a genius and geniuses are never wrong, are they?"
There were places where he wanted nothing more than to float for eternity.
" I do not even know what the device is meant to do."
