Hi everyone!
It’s been a while since I’ve last posted about a series I watched although I consumed QUITE a bit since my last entry, to name just a few:
Cheer Danshi,
Servamp,
Kimi no na wa,
ReLife,
Ao no Exorcist,
Arslan Senki,
Nijiiro Days,
Kiseijuu,
Kimi to Boku,
Super Lovers, .... if interested you can see the full list sorted by finish date
here.
(Also rewatched Haikyuu and Kuroko no Basket.)
Among them were quite a few interesting and good series worth writing about here, but I just don’t have enough time to.
(same old story as always …)
Maybe I’ll get to it some day (but I doubt it) …. At least you can see the rating I gave those series on
MAL (but with the rating alone you still wouldn’t know if the series is worth watching, I guess..)
Anyway, I just finished watching “
Orange”.
I know a lot of people have been talking about it, but I usually always stay away from “airing” series until they’re almost finished.
I just know that I cannot manage to wait a week for the next episode. *g*
Orange was good / nice.
I can understand why some people love it, but also why some people don’t like it. Both is totally legit.
Some say it’s just an overly kitschy romance series, but I would very much argue with that.
For me, this series is not about romance, but about friendship.
And of course, about suicidal behavior / depression.
I like that they actually made this the main topic of this series as this is quite relevant for Japan. The suicide rate is still quite high there, also among school kids.
While I liked the series, there were especially TWO things that made me cringe a lot - which is also why I decided to write about it.
I’m also curious about your opinion on this.
From here onwards you should only continue reading if you don’t mind the spoilers.
The first issue I had with the series was Kakeru’s behavior or way of thinking.
Yes, I guess it’s difficult to comprehend his suicidal behavior if you’ve never been there yourself.
And yes, it’s certainly horrible what happened to him.
However, there are many people in this world who have been through worse and they don’t attempt suicide.
And what makes me so angry is that he has a lovely grandma, he is in perfect health, can do the sport he loves, has the BEST friends on this planet and even a person who is in love with him.
He has people who say and do everything … who even sacrifice many things .. just so he will be happy.
And yet he still thinks about taking his own life. It just makes me angry.
How many people would be happy to have friends like that? To have a lovely grandma like that? To be good at the sport they like? To be in perfect health? etc.
I don’t want to belittle suicidal issues at all(!!!), but I just wanted to say that this made me cringe at times, especially during New Years when - DESPITE ALL THE EFFORTS - the same events were triggered.
However, what really shocked me - and what I have thus far NOT seen being discussed ANYWHERE is the following:
Yes, Suwa is great. Suwa is a hero. Suwa is ready to sacrifice his future with the love of his life just to save his friend Kakeru.
But wait … is he really?
So, they all didn’t know what would really happen when they sent the letters from the future, right?
They had theories, but there was no way they could know for sure.
One possibility is that they would change the current future in which case it’s at least a possibility that Suwa and Naho will never become a couple and will never have that baby together, right?
Another possibility is that their sending of the letters to the past could create an alternative, parallel future. In which case we’d have one future with Suwa-Naho-baby and one where maybe Naho and Kakeru live happily ever after.
Whatever it is, in the end that doesn’t even matter!
We don’t know what really happened. And the movie that will be in the cinemas this November also won’t show it.
However, one thing is for sure.
They (especially Suwa!) were ALL ready to sacrifice one life (the baby) in order to save another (Kakeru).
And this is just something I cannot accept.
Yes, Suwa was ready to give up on his future happiness for the sake of Kakeru, but with that he also possibly “killed” his baby.
That’s just so horrible!
Why is Kakeru’s life worth more than that baby’s? ………..
Nobody seemed to be bothered about this, but me?
Is it because I’m much older than the average viewer or what? XD …………..
Other than that, I do like series with time slips, parallel worlds, time machines etc. (
Stein's Gate,
Boku dake ga inai machi, Kimi no na wa, ...)
In this series, the whole thing didn’t make sense, but as this was not the main point of the series, I think it’s alright to just ignore it.
The group of friends reminded me a little bit of “
Kimi ni todoke”, but NO group will EVER beat the latter.
I guess I’m just a big sucker for friendship series like that. And I thought it was adorable how they all fought for Kakeru (apart from the points I’ve mentioned above).
So, what do you think about the series, its end and my comments?
Were you actually rooting for Kakeru oder Suwa? I totally didn’t care about it this time to be honest.
You know that I can become quite passionate if I DO care (e.g. Taichi vs. Arata in Chihayafuru
).
There also is a live action. Not sure if I wanna watch it, though.
Anyone seen this yet?
Ok, that’s enough rambling. ^^; ……
If you have any series you’d like to recommend, please go ahead!
(Too bad that the Orange movie starts airing 2 days after my vacation in Japan …
)
Bye~chuu!
