I will admit to being stunned that someone was not already going to do a post about Aishwarya Rai by the time that I signed up. She is widely referred to as the most beautiful woman in the world. As you'll see, there's a reason for that.
For anyone who doesn't know Aishwarya Rai is an Indian actress who is one of the most popular actresses working in modern Indian cinema. She first came to prominence in 1994 when she won Miss World. She was studying architecture at the time and, needless to say, after her reign as Miss World ended, she was eagerly sought after for movie roles. Her first role was in a Tamil film, Iruvar, in 1997. Since that time, she's appeared in over 40 movies. She is multi-lingual and has appeared in films in Hindi, Tamil, Bengali and English. Her primary introduction to the US market was in Bride and Prejudice in 2004. She was also in Pink Panther 2 in 2009.
In 2007, she stared in Provoked, an English language film based on the true story of Kiranjit Ahluwalia, a Punjabi woman who killed her abusive husband. The film brought attention to the difficulties of abused women in general and immigrant Punjabi women in the U.K. in particular.
She's won numerous awards, including winning the Filmfare Best Actress awards in 1999 and 2002. To date, she's been nominated 8 times for the Filmfare Best Actress award. In 2004, Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people. She was awarded the Padma Shri in 2009 by the Indian government for distinguished contributions to the arts. She was also given an Order des Arts et des Letres by the French government. My personal favorite honor is that there is a tulip named after her.
In 2007, she married Abhishek Bachchan. The Bachchan family are Bollywood royalty and their marriage was enormous news.
She was one of the first, if not the first, Indian actors to appear on David Letterman. Below is a clip in which she totally puts him in his place.

Personally, I love her acting and I do agree that she's remarkably beautiful. I also admire her for bringing Indian cinema to a larger Western audience. She was recently on the Tyra Banks show and there was a little dance lesson (as an aside I always forget that Tyra is 27 feet tall).
