It's easier to review a song when it has an MV (music video). I know I promised Babo but I'm still struggling on how to comment on it.
Anyway, before Shinee debut yesterday, there had been many netizens who criticized them and said they won't be as popular as TVXQ, Suju and Big Bang and that they looked really gay and whatsoever. My advice: Give them a chance and stop comparing them to other boybands! Anyway, I don't freaking what the netizens and the anti fans are going to say, I'm liking them!
The song is very catchy and being a typical SM product, the song is danceable. Heck, all K-pops are danceable to me. Very easy and light on the ears. It sounds more R&B than the usual bubblegum pop that SM always produce. Vocally, they're okay but I spotted a few soundalikes. For instance, Jong Hyun's voice during the line 'Gasuemee sorachinda ibyul apehsuh' sounds almost like Anuar Zain, a Malaysian singer. No offence, I am a fan of Anuar Zain, it's just something that I notice when I heard Jong Hyun sang. KEY almost sounds like Chang Min from TVXQ. Like I said before in my previous entries, Min Ho looks Malay to me and Onew reminds me of Kangta hence he earns the nickname Little Kangta. The song is basically about a guy having a crush on an older girl (clue: Noona which Korean boys address girls/young women who are older than them, ie: sisters). I feel honoured listening to it as I'm a Noona myself.
I watched the MV and some viewers commented that the MV somehow reminds them of a few Big Bang MVs such as We Belong Together, Lies and Lalala. They're right. There are similarities but there are slight changes. Dance steps are pretty weird though but not as weird as Super Junior's Galjeung. No offence to Suju fans, I'm just expressing my opinion. I really like Tae Min's dance. Victoria Song, the girl in the MV is very pretty and she was in Super Junior M's U MV (no wonder she looked really familiar). Personally, I like her hairstyle better in this MV compared to the straight hair in U. The waves somehow softens her face making her look younger and more easy on the eyes.
The verdict: Overall, this song is very addictive and catchy. Suitable for teenage girls and young adults. The beat can easily make you get up and dance. Not bad for first-timers. However, I don't really like their hairstyles, especially Tae Min's. Fashionwise, they are okay. I really like the jackets that they wear in the MV. I notice that Jong Hyun wears the scarf around his neck G-Dragon-style. No, I'm not saying that he copied from GD. I had to admit, Big Bang do play a big part in today's fashion statement in Korea, especially towards boys. Anyway, they are still new and young. It's perfectly natural for them to have flaws here and there. There is still room for them to improve themselves and develop their own style. In my opinion, Shinee is definitely one of the music group to watch for this year. They have potential to succeed in the music industry just like their sunbaes. They're neither Big Bang copycat nor the next TVXQ. They're Shinee.
PS: The name is pretty weird for male music group though but what the heck.
