Tartan

I got out of two classes early today. After my writing class I went to the Writing Lab and got on line. I thought I would look up kilts. Well I did find the Tartan Homepage. Tartan is what a kilt is made of. It is not plaid. It has to have certian deminsions to be called an actual kilt. Any ways, I wanted to see how much the full Formal wear would cost. This formal wear is called "Prince Charlie" after the Prince that has made that style famous. Does anyone have any idea how much the full thing costs? Try over 600 pounds. In American money that is well over $1,400! That ain't no cheap outfit. It includes all the bells and whistles. The Kilt, The shoes, socks, shirt, vest, tie, coat, pouch (do not know what it is called. hangs in the front of the kilt) belt, and the ahhh...it is gaelic for Black Knife. Literally it is a black knife that is hidden in the belt, or sock. There is a debate on if one should wear underwear. Traditionally one does not wear underwear. In the military the only time one would wear it would be at a formal occassion, and in the presence of ladies. Other wise it is refered to going regimental. Why? The reason is the kilt worn for battle is not to have underwear. Therfore the regiments have to do this. Hint Regimental. Actually the short kilt is fairly modern. Made in about 1700. The original was a full cloak. But that is too much to go into, military kept wearing that even in some early wars. The revival of the Kilt was attributed to the ban on it number one, and the Celtic revival of the 1800's i think that time is right. Well you learn something everyday. Which leads me to the word of the day.
Tartan-n any of numerous textile patterns of Scottish origin consitsting of stripes of varying widths and colors crossed at right angles against a solid background. (The American Heritage Dictionary 838)
