The beauties of procrastination.

Even though the concert movie was a wash, the evening ended on a high note: we got Tron Legacy on Blu-Ray, and HOLY CRAP PRETTY. It is, by far, the best I've seen a movie on Blu-Ray yet. And even though there's no way to replicate the amazing midnight show experience I had - 3D with motion seats? Pretty spectacular - the colors are downright stunning. I still have problems with the story and dialogue, but it's a visual experience movie, not the pinnacle of well-rounded filmmaking. And I'm okay with that.

At this point, I'd normally share fic links; I read a bunch recently, and there's some stories I'd definitely like to talk about. But unfortunately, the vast majority are on LJ, and LJ isn't loading for me at all. So have a couple of non-LJ links instead:

-How To Steal Like An Artist (And 9 Other Things Nobody Told Me).

The author says it himself: "All advice is autobiographical. Your mileage may vary." Not all of this applied to me - the "use your hands" bit is nice occasionally, but me/computers is my OTP and always has been. Still, I found it immensely inspirational. A lot of the ideas I could've used a good decade ago ("creativity is subtraction" and "don't wait to find yourself" in particular), but it's still nice to see now.

-sex, and slash sex scenes

Slash was the only genre of literature I had ever found that followed the characters into bed and back out of it; that investigated and demonstrated how the people they were outside of bed were connected to the people they were in bed; that modeled how to be with someone in everyday life, go to bed with them, and then wake up next to them and continue everyday life with them.

This is why I've really been clicking with fic lately (and the good writers I've found in bandom in particular): the best stories connect everything. This is a good time to be a fic reader and writer because I've seen this happen whether there's same-sex pairings, different-sex pairings, pairings where one or both of the people don't fall into the gender binary, and relationships that consists of just one person or more than two people.

It's the best reason to be out of the mainstream, really. People may mock those weird slash fangirls, but little do they know that fangirls - and fans of any gender identification or lack thereof - have access to stories with a depth that non-fans will probably never experience.
