feedback for upcoming commissions?

Nov 12, 2010 15:20

So I've come to the end of my first round of new commissions. I'm not quite ready to open up for more, but I do want to get some feedback on what I will be offering, and for how much.

Firstly, Compare the original sample images I did with the images I did for Klandagi the other day. I can't realistically offer them for $15 each anymore, that's ( Read more... )

feedback, commissions

$80 is totally reasonable and I wish I had snagged one earlier xD Ha. Also yes, dark paper kicks ass! When you run out, perhaps you can tone your own? It's kinda fun, though messy!

Cats don't really tickle my fancy though, on the cat painting piece. And I think it would be a little weird to offer those of people's characters or whatever, it just feels like a standalone piece and not something 'memeable'.

Hmm, With the cat paintings I'm definitely not talking about mass-producing them or anything. Mostly, I feel like I could do something better than than first one, and it's a concept worth working with a little more in depth. I don't want it to become too repetitive, though, which is why I don't want to accept more than one at a time, and with the warning that I might not end up doing more than one of them. Which is why I have the dilemma about how to fairly offer that first one. I may just decide on a price and then do a lottery drawing between whoever says they want it. That seems fair, right?

Thank you!

Don't feel bad, I was just pointing it out for comparison. If I reasonably COULD put out that kind of work for that price I would, happily. It's annoying to me that money has to be such a factor!

Thank you for the feedback!

I think that price is reasonable. :)

And the dark paper is awesome!

If you still want to do art for money and are worried about missing out on people with low budgets, try offering icons or TinyArt of some kind?

Haha, the trouble, for me, is keeping TinyArt tiny! I thought that's what I was doing with these current things, making them fit three per 6x9" page, but I started packing in the detail almost immediately. And there's nothing particularly wrong with that, either, I've been enjoying them and learning from them, too. (I've started inking consistently with brushpen, something I've tried repeatedly to do in the past but have always ended up being too heavy handed!)

I would like to keep a TinyArt option open most of the time, though, so I suppose I should work on that!

THANK YOU!

I echo the icons suggestion. Icons, badges, sketches -- or other small items usually sell well! Especially with the holiday seasoning coming this way, people usually don't have too much excess money to spend on personal "for fun" stuff.
For me, I'm usually willing to toss around up to $20 for spontaneous "for fun" items. It's not a lot, but most items over the $20 mark need more consideration before purchase (or those funds are used for more specific/serious ideas I want to get done).
Hope this little tidbit of feedback helps!

I've been charging $50 to $100 depending on detail required/requested.

I know this is terribly under-priced. My agency has been charged $500 for simple comics like you'd see in the political section of a newspaper.

It's a balance of three things:
1. what can you afford to do for the money...
2. how little money can you charge before the commissions make you feel miserable...
3. how much can/will your fans pay...

I have no idea how those items add up for myself. Best to just advertise yourself like crazy and let the new flow of customers help you set a new standard.

Oh god, if I had the money I would totally be like PLEASE DRAW A COMMISSION OF MY CATS LIKE THE CAT PAINTING ONE

I love that pic and the whole idea. It reminds me of that book "why cats paint" <3
