Once Upon a Time - Lacey Review

I truly loved this episode! It has taken me forever to write something up about it but I've finally finished. *whew* Now it's time to work on The Evil Queen. :)

While I love the episode in and of itself, I would still love it even if it was only the episode where Belle got OUT OF THE HOSPITAL. They completely dropped the ball on the Belle storyline and allowed her to languish - for absolutely no reason - as a hospital patient. This was an issue with them last season and it only got worse this season. I do hope they tighten things up next season. It's one thing to have to put aside a character for a while and focus on others and quite another to do so in such a nonsensical way.

But that is over now! Gold remembered where she was and went to spring her from confinement. And then all manner of entertaining hell broke out courtesy of Regina. She has her mojo back, is done crying for the moment, and we can once again depend on her to do what she does best - screw up the lives of anyone feels has wronged her. And Gold has CERTAINLY wronged her so I can't say he doesn't deserve it. Unfortunately for Belle it is nearly impossible to come at the Dark One directly so she again is caught in the crossfire.

Very sassy crossfire. Regina is definitely feeling more herself now that she has appointed herself mayor again. (Really. How does that work? She just announced it and they were all 'well there is A LOT of paperwork piled up so why not?') Since I am in favor of ALL the sass and not in favor of delusional Regina these scenes made me a happy fangirl.

He might have won the first round but she definitely won the second. :D

And now he is at a LOSS. The man has NO CLUE why Belle loves him but at least has spent enough time trying to figure out what she likes that he has an idea of where to start. But with hard drinking, dismissive Lacey where does he being? Like amnesia!Dave, amnesia!Belle was the true essence of herself - she was Belle without Belle's memories but with Belle's personality. (Think back to David at the beginning. He was Charming without the memories. It wasn't until he was whammied by the windmill that he became weak, spineless David Nolan.)

Where does he begin? Well, with Charming of course! That is where he goes for all his love advice needs and to have relationship talks. It's so interesting that he is willing to show Charming his vulnerability and to show some of the man beneath the masks. And Charming does give some good advice. But the question is who is the man she fell in love with?

He thinks it was all about the 'nice' part of him. That she will only love him if he is good so he tries for good and ends up tying himself in knots. The nice, non-threatening shopkeeper isn't who he is and isn't who Belle fell in love with. He has forgotten that she fell for the complicated, difficult, annoying, and dangerous but layered Dark One who she couldn't quite figure out. Belle likes a challenge and so does Lacey.

He gives her a pillow for her comfort while seeming completely flummoxed by her tears and acts as though he simply wants her to muffle her sobs. He captures a thief and proceeds to torture him (though obviously not too much since he was basically fine) but doesn't do anything worse than snap at her and poof away her book in irritation when she frees him. He wants to deal for info but makes it clear that Belle is NOT for sale. He talks about killing Robin Hood and then claims to have missed when he actually gets around to shooting him. This is the man she fell for. Not a bumbling, nervous and harmless shopkeeper. Even if he is all adorable like that.

And he gives her a library. With some covering words about it simply being another room to clean. But he knows what these books mean to her. And this is CLEARLY a grand, romantic gesture only slightly obscured so he can pretend it isn't. That he hasn't already fallen for her.

Though I'm sure who he thinks he is fooling. She has him wrapped around her little finger from the moment she hugs him. And she knows it.

But back to Lacey. What does she like and what does she want? It turns out that she likes him DARK. Lacey is all of Belle's desire for adventure and excitement turned up to eleven and her interest in helping people muted. So Gold is going to put on a show for her and keep her close by letting himself off the leash. He is her and will do whatever it takes to bring back Belle

Oh, and don't worry about her forgiving him. This is a woman who hugged him directly after he tortured and nearly killed someone. She can handle it. The one who is going to learn something about the other is HIM. He has Belle on a pedestal built up by years regret and the pain of thinking her dead. It's past time she got knocked off that. Pedestals are not healthy for relationships.
