Once Upon a Time Scenes Picspam - 202: We Are Both

Mar 08, 2013 18:38

It's time for my We Are Both favorite scenes picspam! This one got a little bit long since there were a number of scenes I really loved in this episode. And, what can I say, I do so enjoy the Rumpel/Regina relationship. It's so twisted and wrong.

I'll start the picspam with a pair of related scenes. In the first we have a scene of Regina with her mother, and in the second, a scene of her with her father. In each scene Regina makes it clear that she does not want to marry the king and simply wants to be free of this life.

One thing I find interesting about these two scenes is how clearly they show that Cora is the dominant one in her marriage with Henry and how they reinforce our knowledge that Cora considers Regina to be in many ways a puppet or tool for her to live through. Regina is not valuable to Cora for herself but for representing a way for Cora to still win and become Queen. She came so close before and lost out and she NOT going to do that again. Regina never had a chance (though she thinks she did before Snow ruined it) to get away.

No matter what Cora needs to do her daughter will marry Leopold. Because that is what Cora wants and what Cora wants, Cora gets. Henry knows this and I'm certain he also knows what can happen if he steps out of line. His advice to Regina is very enabling and rather insulting. However, let's note that he spills the beans on Rumpelstiltskin. Without that Regina would have married Leopold without ever having any choice in the matter and would have never discovered her power.

Regina: Momma, I don’t want to marry the King. I don’t want this life!
Cora: You’re just frightened of having all that power.
Regina: I don’t want power. I want to be free.
Cora: Power is freedom. Don’t worry. I’m here to show you.

Regina: Daddy, you don’t know what Mother’s doing to me. It’s like she’s turning me into her. I have to get away...I don’t want to marry the King. I’ve told you that.
Henry: Well, you’re certain it isn’t just cold feet?
Regina: Daddy, this is not cold feet. This...This is...This is insanity. I’m angry all the time. She’s making me crazy.

Here we have the first meeting of Rumpelstiltskin and Regina! At least the first she can remember. *g* And let us note she summoned him into her life knowing that he was the reason Cora knew magic and knowing he made Cora what she is. He certainly manipulated her but she made a definitive choice to call him. Rumpel specializes in the desperate and Regina here is so very desperate. So very much what he needs for his curse.

He is smooth and courtly and seductive in this scene. Exactly the way to be to lull her into trusting him. And then the magic he offers her is perfect. She is damaged but still gentle and kind, horrified at the thought of hurting anyone and completely unable to do anything she think will harm her mother. So he doesn't give her anything to harm Cora and doesn't even require that she use magic against her. All she need do is push and he knows he can count on Cora to force the issue and pull out that reservoir of anger Regina is harboring.

Regina: Rumpelshtil- Rumpelshtilshin, I summon thee.
Rumpelstiltskin: That’s not how you say it, dearie. But then, you didn’t have to say anything...I knew you long ago, dearie. It’s been some time, but I knew this day would come. I’ve been waiting for it. And I’m so happy, we’re back where we belong.
Regina: And where’s that?
Rumpelstiltskin: Together...Oh, yes. I know everything about you, my dear. I held you in my arms. You were younger. More...Portable. There is much history between your family and me. History both in the past, and in the future.

And here is my favorite scene in the episode! Rumpelstiltskin the salesman confronting her as she leaves and wheedling out of her the admission that she enjoyed using magic. As in their first scene together, he is playing the gentleman with the lovely spinning wheel cravat, the richly colored waistcoat and the ruffled sleeves. But where previously he was seductively trying his very best to convince Regina to act (to push her mother out of the picture), now he is trying ever angle to convince her to continue. She has what she said she wanted. She has her freedom and is leaving to enjoy it but that will not do for Rumpel. This is his moment to convince her to stay and to learn magic. He sing songs; he cajoles; he makes empty promises; and it works.

Rumpelstiltskin: Before you go...Answer me this - how did it feel?
Regina: I loved my mother.
Rumpelstiltskin: B-But that’s not what I asked, dearie. How did it feel to use magic?
Regina: It doesn’t matter. I-I’ll never use it again.
Rumpelstiltskin: Why not?
Regina: Because I loved it.
Rumpelstiltskin: You’ve discovered who you are. You could do so much now, if you let me show you how.

The pushing scene! Cora not only lays out Regina's entire life before her, making sure that Regina is quite aware Cora will be running it, but also uses magic against her. Something she knows Regina HATES. The difference is now Regina has been told she is powerful so instead of acquiescing as she always did in the past (since what choice did she have?), she fights back. For the first time in her life Regina is able to make a choice for herself and no one is able to stop her. Is it any wonder that she couldn't resist the lure of magic?

Cora: Look at you with your whole life ahead of you. It’s going to be better than you can imagine. The King’s not a strong man. The kingdom will be yours. Raise the tributes, form a personal guard, let everyone know where the new power lies, and you’ll hold the hearts of your people in your hands.
Regina: Is that what you would do, Mother?
Cora: That’s exactly what I would do...What are you doing? You think it’s that easy to get rid of me? You’re stuck with me forever, darling. Because I’m your mother, and I know best.

===============================

And to end I have another Rumpel/Regina scene, this one in present day Storybrooke. Here the history between them and the bitterness they share colors everything. They are both snark and sharpness and threats. And I love it. It is a day of setbacks for Rumpel - he finds out about the memory loss at the town line and his please stops working! And then he gets outmaneuvered into giving up the spell book. I do wish they had kept magic difficult in our world instead of dropping that so soon. He does get the last dig in though. Comparing her to her mother. Burn.

Mr. Gold: Do you really need the smell of the written word to get the magic flowing again, love? Maybe if you relaxed, it would just happen.
Regina: I don’t have time. It worked once, I know I can do it. I just...I just need a shortcut back.
Mr. Gold: Yeah, well, I don’t have time, either. Leave. Please.
Regina: Well, how about that. Your ‘pleases’ have lost their punch...You know what else isn’t in your best interest? Having everyone know the Enchanted Forest still exists. Knowing that, you and I, are keeping that little secret. You’re up to something. And it doesn’t involve going back home.
Mr. Gold: Careful, dearie. These are straight up spells. Rough on the system.
