Okay. I've done some more quilting today (twice in a row! maybe I'll make it a habit.), had a chance to have some alone time, and refreshed my memory of the episode. I'm not going to try for a long, involved review as I usually would but I think I can work out some bullet points.
This episode picks up soon after Red Handed with Red and Snow on the run from the Queen's men. Which makes me wonder how they found Snow. Did Regina zero in on her with magic or did news of the werewolf girl and her frosty friend spread from the village with Regina graciously offering to help them with their wolf problem in exchange for info? However they were spotted the Queen's men are quite persistent! It's like Charming and King George. No one in FTL land believes in giving up no matter what. And, thus, they make their enemies stronger. Snow would never have become the tough fighter we see if she didn't have to avoid getting killed at every turn and Charming would not have even been an enemy if George didn't keep pursuing him relentlessly.
• I've said it before and I'll say it again - Granny is awesome. The frozen lasagnas. The crossbow bolt right through a torch so that it caught on fire. The welding. The crack about wolf hearing and owning a hotel. Hee. I suppose she can only be happy that her wolf hearing wasn't at full strength for most of the time under the curse.
• Another mom gone! Though we thought she was gone already so I'm not sure how much it counts. Knowing that Anita was fully on the wolf side of things I'm not surprised that Granny told Red she was dead. What else is she going to say especially since she was keeping the whole wolf thing secret? I'm not sure why Anita would think that Red would go along with killing Snow though. A banishment for Snow where they send her somewhere to the edge of their territory to make her way alone would have given Anita her daughter back to stay.
• The Regina and Gold scene was exceedingly interesting. First, that Regina called him in the first place. She can seem to shake a desire to go to him for help; though he is extremely knowledgeable and it seems he was almost always willing to deal with her even after they had their falling out. Second, there was the contrast of Gold's snarky annoyance with Regina (which is a HUGE reduction in tension since the whole wraith thing) and his solicitude for Henry. While I doubt his actions here were completely selfless - but few things in life are - I do think he genuinely likes and respects Henry. Third, we got info on Henry's dream state and now know it's a real and separate dimension which Gold knows all about. Hmmm. And fourth, Gold did not charge Henry for the amulet but rather chose to bear the cost of it himself. Unlike most people who do this (say...Thomas in Price of Gold), he knows what the cost will be and doesn't wish to burden Henry with it.
• At this point I REALLY WANT TO KNOW what caused Regina and Gold to have their falling out. This can't be all about Belle since he had no idea that Regina was any more than a gleeful bearer of bad news until Belle showed up again. Not to mention that they were obviously at odds even before Skin Deep. All I know right now is that Rumpel has a deep and abiding anger towards her, something we saw clearly from the last few episodes of season one.
• Control. Control. Control. It's popping up in every episode this season. I sense a theme...
• Even though the hat is no more *moment of silence*, let's not forget that we have fairy dust again! The fairies seem to have been at normal, human ability levels but they are about to get a level up. I'm sure Gold and Regina (and any other magical bad guys) have been expecting this and are prepared but this does level the playing field a bit.
