I'm still working on my favorite scenes picspams for all the episodes and it's time for True North. As I had only seen the episode once, I wasn't sure how it would fare on rewatch but I think I might have enjoyed it a bit more this time around.
It was great seeing Emma win a round with Regina. Yes, she generally loses when she goes straight up against her (except in Desperate Souls) but when Emma can find a way around Regina and go to the heart of the matter she wins. And here Emma does find a way and reunites the family. I've seen criticism of this episode as far it privileging birth parents over adoptive parents but I think that's missing the point of the episode. They are NOT the result of a one night stand and their father isn't just a father from DNA only. They were a loving family who wanted to be together but who were ripped apart by the Evil Queen and then kept apart by the curse. The abandoned children and unwilling father are a story. Underneath those false memories is the truth and they may not remember yet but they can still feel it when they see each other.
For my scenes the first two I chose two were ones of Hansel and Gretel. Well actually I chose these scenes for Gretel because Gretel is awesome and fierce and damn smart. If I were to do a post about all the wonderful female characters on this show, Gretel would definitely be one of them. How many children did Regina send in there? And only Gretel came out. No thanks to Hansel though. Hansel is rather dim and it's good he has his sister looking after him because he would have been eaten by a bear long before the Blind Witch had a chance at him.
This is close enough.
The house is protected by magic. I can’t enter. But, luckily, the spell doesn’t work on children. You’ll have to wait here until nightfall. And then, once the witch is asleep, you can sneak in.
And if we do this, you promise you’ll find our father?
Oh, indeed, I will. But there’s one more thing - the witch’s house is...unique. And because of this, you have to take special precaution once you’re inside. No matter what you do, no matter how you’re tempted - don’t eat anything.

And here is another scene of Gretel being fierce and not fooled by Regina while Hansel is ready to follow her around like a puppy. *sigh* Gretel still needs to learn a little tact though. With some waterworks and flattery it is possible that the Queen would not have stranded them in the middle of the forest. (Though she might have done it anyway since she despises any and all happiness, true love, or loving families that cross her path.) Speaking truth to power is a brave thing to do but is likely to get you killed when you are dealing with the Evil Queen.
I look forward to seeing just how dysfunctional Regina's home life was for her not to understand why children would want to be reunited with their father even if they were told he had abandoned them.
Of course. To reunite your family, so you can live happily ever after. You were left alone in the woods. You deserve better than a father who would abandon you.
But he’s all we have.
Perhaps, he doesn’t have to be. You and your brother have impressed me. You aren’t the first boy or girl that I’ve sent into that...sticky sweet house. But, you are the first to emerge. And as a reward, I’ve decided to invite the two of you to live with me. Here.
You mean that we get to live in a castle?
Yes. You would have your own rooms, of course. Personal carriages - valets, too. All of your dreams could come true.
No. We want our father back. He would never abandon us. And even if he did, we would never want to live with someone as terrible as you.

For my third scene I picked a Emma&Mary Margaret scene since I do love them together. I think the writers have done a lovely job of balancing the surface friendship between the women and the undertones of a mother/daughter relationship. And this is the scene when Mary Margaret first finds out that Emma is her daughter. No, she doesn't believe it yet but then why would she believe she has a daughter who is her age? But her buried memories peek out just enough for her to be drawn to Emma's baby blanket to give it a sniff.
What’s Henry’s theory?
Well, that my parents put me in a magical wardrobe and sent me to this world to save them.
Aw. And who does he think they are?
Well, for one, you. Well, Snow White.
Snow White has a kid?
Apparently that book you gave him? Not exactly the stories in the most traditional sense.
I have a kid. You’d think I’d remember that...You do kind of have my chin.

And of course I included the Mr. Gold scene! How could I not? *g* I seriously adore his tie in this episode. It's orange and swirly and gorgeous. As is he. Gorgeous I mean, not orange and swirly.
Based on their conversation I'd say this is the first time Emma has directly dealt with Gold since the sheriff race. She is still quite wary of him here though she is willing to give him tolerance if not forgiveness for his manipulations. For him to ask for forgiveness makes it clear just how much he needs Emma to work with him though. Which in turn makes me wonder how much he has manipulated the Mary Margaret situation.
Emma. How lovely to see you. I’m flattered you’d take time off your busy schedule for me. What could I do for you, Sheriff?
I’m looking for information on this old compass. Any idea where it could have come from?
Well, well. Look at the detail. You know, this is crystal. This jeweled setting… In despite the rather unfortunate shape it’s in, this is actually a very unusual piece. The person who owned this obviously had great taste.
And where would someone like that buy it?
Right here, of course.

What’s your price?
Forgiveness.
How about tolerance?
Well, that’s a start.
