River Song
So...I haven't posted much about Doctor Who lately (and almost nothing about the finale) but I have been thinking about it! It was a frustrating season for me in some ways since I completely LOVED some parts of it and really HATED others. However, at the very least I can say that I wasn't bored by it and that's a good thing. Season 5 was much less frustrating but also much less interesting to me since it didn't go beneath the surface enough.
Anyway, there is something I've thinking about with River. Something I'm sure others have noticed as well but I wanted to discuss it here.
River is Rose 2.0.
She is so completely Moffat's answer to Rose that it's a bit breathtaking. Not a mirror to Rose (that would be Martha up to and including the missing year for both of them), but Rose on steroids. I definitely saw her as Rose-like before but the Wedding of River Song made it come into focus.
Rose kisses the clone Doctor? River marries AND KISSES the Doctor (while he's wearing a Doctor suit but he was still there)!
Rose can be argued to have been doing something dangerous to the universe to get back to the Doctor? River actively destroys the universe to save the Doctor!
Rose can be described as obsessed with the Doctor? (Though I see their relationship as equal in any obsession or over-investment qualities.) River is designed to be obsessed with the Doctor!
For some reason I have this song running through my head. :D
Anything you can do I can do better; I can do anything better than you...
I can just see Moffat watching RTD's Who and saying 'Ha! I can do that better. Mine will be MORE epic, MORE all-encompassing, MORE tragic, and MORE completely obsessed with the Doctor. AND I'll contrive to have mine marry the Doctor's robot double. So more awesome than kissing his clone.'
And people thought that Moffat would get rid of all that icky relationship stuff. Heh.
ETA: For anyone who is new around here or who can't remember my views on the characters:
Rose is awesome. I love her with Nine AND with Ten AND when she came back. River is also awesome. I do love her more in recent seasons than in her first appearance but, know what I know now, I retroactively enjoy her first appearance more. I never was sick of seeing Rose show up and I'm not bored with River now. My only issue with River is how poorly her backstory has developed. I can not ship her with Eleven knowing that she was CREATED for the Doctor from the moment of her conception.
