I have now seen the Doctor Who Christmas special! \o/ It'll be good to be able to read everyone's discussions about it now. Not that I was fussed about spoilers but I didn't want preconceived notions in my head as I watched.
At some point I will have an actual review of the episode (I hope today!) but right now all I have is a pile of disjointed sentence fragments. Once I started writing down my thoughts last night I realized that I had several things to say not only about the Christmas special specifically but also about Moffat's Who in general and about Eleven. Unfortunately I was WAY TOO TIRED to actually make a coherent post about any of that so I need to go through my scribbles and try to organize them.
I will say right now that I enjoyed the episode. It had its good points and bad points but overall it was fun and I was happy at the end. What else do you want from a Christmas special after all?

One thing that I've realized about Eleven just recently is that he is the Doctor as seen by human or at least non-timelord eyes. RTD brought us right up close to the Doctor to see him clearly both good and bad and even showed us how things might look from the Doctor's viewpoint. Whereas Moffat has pulled back and even put the Doctor into soft focus. Of course Eleven can seem remote and opaque: a trickster or guide that you only see for a moment. No human is going to see or understand more than a little part of him. Not even someone like Amy who travels with him. She (and most everyone else) brings so much of her own human interpretation to the Doctor that he can't be anything else but a fairytale. He is the Doctor through a child's eyes.
