Everyone talks about Blink being the scariest and it did make me jump the first time but Midnight gets me every time I watch. Ten is terrified and everyone else has become a mob. *shudder*
Yes. The end when he's down to nothing - that's the worst.
I can't tell you how much I love that so many people are picking Midnight as their favourite episode! During S4 I wasn't so much into LJ fandom as Outpost Gallifrey and after this episode I went online and there was so much whinging about how it was boring, not scary, irritating, etc and I was like OMG WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?!!??
I suppose that if you don't get caught up in David Tennant's acting and like to complain about everything (especially everything have to do with new Who), Midnight is not that special. However, both of these things are excellent reasons not to spend time with people like that!
I have problems with Midnight. I love David in it, i do, but i have trouble with the idea that people would turn on each other so quickly. I hated the movie the Mist for the same reason. But it is a really good episode, even though it doesn't scare me, because i don't scare easy. I can scare earthgirl95 all the time quite easily, something i take delight in. Which i suppose is cruel of me.
Maybe it would help to think of the people as influenced by the alien. Not that they wouldn't be angry and panicking anyway, but not to that extent. At the end Sky!alien says, "That's how he does it. He makes you fight. Creeps into your head and whispers." Now, there's nothing saying the alien actually did that, but it's certainly possible.
I hadn't thought of it that way until i read your entry. It just bothers me how harsh plotlines of this ilk are. Why do they always assume that the worst is going to come out? Why isn't it ever "Look how everyone is working together!"??? I like things to be uplifting. Still, this is a good episode, and David just blows you away in it.
I rate Midnight far more highly than Blink actually. I mean, they're both great episodes but I think they really do illustrate the differences between the two writers that so many of us are talking about right now. In Midnight WE are the monsters - it's utterly chilling and completely brilliant, and from the audience's point of view, because we know who the Doctor is and that he spends most of his time saving humans/the Earth, it's so much more than chilling, it's truly horrifying.
Blink scares my kids. Midnight scares ME because it shows how truly horrible we are capable of being to each other. It's a punch to the gut, a smack to the head... however you want to play it, it's Rusty at his best - intelligent, visceral and TRUE.
I'm not sure if Blink would make it into my top ten episodes of new Who. I enjoy it but I don't feel the need to rewatch it like I do others. Not only does Midnight go for scary people as opposed to scary monsters, but it focuses on the Doctor and I really watch mainly for him whether we're talking Ten or Eleven or any of the others.
RTD could write some really excellent tv. Like Joss Whedon, he can rip your heart out and make you like it.
