David Tennant Conquers Christmas, Attempts to Conquer the US

Well, now we know what David Tennant was doing in the US for three weeks! A tv pilot! (BBC news, Hollywood Reporter) Woohoo!

From Backstage:
Rex is Not Your Lawyer (Drama). A successful, high-powered attorney begins having debilitating panic attacks in court that close up his throat and prevent him from speaking. Instead of giving up his practice, he teaches his clients to represent themselves instead. Written by Andrew Leeds and David Lampson. Casting: Junie Lowry Johnson and Libby Goldstein, 100 Universal City Plaza, Bungalow 5165, Universal City, CA 91608. Shoots in mid-October.

I thought it was too soon for anything on the movie he apparently auditioned for at the same time, though it could have been a call-back I suppose, but tv can move more quickly when it wants. Is it a good sign or a bad one that the concept was first pitched three years ago? *thinks* Maybe neither since there are so many other considerations when deciding what gets made into a pilot.

I'm not sure about the premise (lawyer teaching clients to represent themselves??) or the possibility of an US accent from him (his previous attempts were not so good, to put it kindly). However, I would not object if he got a season or two out of this, provided it's good... *g* I will say that a comedy/drama would be right up his alley and a good vocal coach could deal with the accent, though I shall still hope for a Scottish or English accent. Also, we know he can act, so with some good writing it could be completely awesome. If it gets picked up, of course. If it's not picked up, anyone care to lay bets on how long it takes before a copy leaks out?

In other Tennant news, I do have to wonder what the Hamlet people were thinking choosing Christmas day for their air date. They must have known that Doctor Who would air that day as well and that there would be a decent amount of overlap in the viewership. Just look at the stage performances with all the Tennant and/or Who fans who paid good money to see him. How many more would watch without the money and travel involved? It doesn't matter to me much either way though since the chances of me watching Hamlet or Doctor Who on Christmas are approximately zero.
