No One Wants The SciFi Geeks
By now you've probably heard the the Scifi channel is changing its name. (if you haven't they are changing it to SyFy...I know...WTF) I've read a few articles on the change, but this has got to be my favorite -- SciFi Channel Changes to 'Syfy' -- Insults Entire Audience in the Process. Here are a few quotes from it:
It's not unusual for TV executives to brainstorm boneheaded schemes designed to rebrand their failing channels -- schemes that often come nowhere near addressing the channel's actual problems. But you'd be hard pressed to find a scheme more desperate, more clueless, or more laughable than Sci Fi Channel's new idea to fix what ain't broke.
"The name Sci Fi has been associated with geeks and dysfunctional, antisocial boys in their basements with video games and stuff like that, as opposed to the general public and the female audience in particular," Tim Brooks, who helped launch Sci Fi Channel, told TVWeek. "It's somewhat cooler and better than the name 'Science Fiction.' But even the name Sci Fi is limiting."
The whole thing is a head scratcher: A sci-fi based network that's successful because it runs science fiction programming, wanting to get away from science fiction because they don't want to specialize.
I'll stop there or I'm going to be quoting the whole thing. What a pack of idiots! Thankfully, with the end of BSG, there is very little that I would watch there anyway.
In 'hand me the brain bleach' news, here's an article about a brainstorming conference that took place during the planning for Indiana Jones -- How George Lucas Almost Made Indiana Jones a Sex Offender. Ick.
