It's mostly New Age stuff and cults, so I'm not fantastically worried since I'm usually pretty good at coming up with stuff for that, and it's basically the same subject as last year anyway, but... first exam nerves

The problem with this is that most of it is soft, gooey crap, and my brain seems to decide to eject it for fear of infection.

My favourite is still the secularisation/sacralisation issue. BOTH SIDES ARE WRONG, but the constant flux in Western society means that in any given year, there's evidence towards one or the other. Just not if you look at them in the long term.

And "Both sides are wrong, and you guys need to stop getting what you want to be happening mixed up with what you think is going to happen" isn't a valid argument.

But one that a lot of academics in this field need to have beaten into their heads.

I secretly think academia is a lot like the horrible cliquey forums on the internet, only with even worse flame wars, and a legit excuse to be a bunch of circlejerking bastards.

Nothing I have seen has convinced me otherwise.

I am in complete agreement. Except instead of flaming each other on forums, they write whole books about how they're right and the other guy is wrong. It's like no one ever introduced them to the concept of TL;DR.
