Oliver leaned over and kissed her temple lightly, sliding one arm around her back to help her keep balanced. "I know," he murmured soothingly, rubbing her back gently.
She leaned against him and sighed once more, deeply. "I'm scaring you." It wasn't a question. He had barely said anything after the doctor told her she should go home.
A faint smile tugged at his mouth. "No. You're not scaring me," he assured her, punching the button for the lobby floor. "I'm just ready for her to be here, too."
Chloe nodded a little and closed her eyes, sighing softly then stilling as a thunder shook the entire building, "oh I forgot we were supposed to have tornado weather today. It's probably raining already."
He rubbed her hip lightly. "If it is, we'll stop by the gift shop and buy an umbrella," he told her, watching the floor numbers decline slowly, one by one.
He barely suppressed a chuckle. "Not that I know of, Professor," he told her, kissing her cheek. Suddenly the elevator went dark and lurched to an abrupt stop, the emergency lights coming on. "What the hell?"
Her eyes widened and she stood up straight, well as straight as she could, "what happened?" She asked, even though it was pretty obvious that they were out of power.
"I think the power's out," he told her, reluctantly letting her go and moving over to the emergency box. He opened it and picked up the telephone, dialing 0 for the operator.
Chloe took a deep breath and lifted a hand to her stomach, watching him closely as he waited. If it was going to take more than five seconds she was going to sit down.
He sighed softly as he listened to the person on the other end of the line. "All right. Thank you. We'll...be waiting." He hung up the phone and turned to his wife. "The electricity's out. The back-up generators are already powered up, but they're being used in the O.R., the E.R., and the ICU. They don't have enough of them to run the elevators. Looks like we're waiting."
Chloe groaned and rubbed her hands over her face. "Did they day how long?" She asked, suddenly glad she had stopped by the bathroom after they left the doctor's office on the top floor.
Chloe took a deep breath and looked at him for a moment then nodded, "great," she told him, leaning back against the elevator and holding out her hand, "help me sit down?"
He quickly moved to her side, wrapping an arm around her waist. "Yeah, of course." He helped her ease down onto the floor until she was sitting with her back to the wall. He sat down beside her, keeping his arm around her and resting his other hand lightly on her stomach.
Chloe took a deep breath and stretched her legs in front of herself, looking over ah him and nodding, "thank you," she told him quietly then stilled, holding her breath and looking down at her stomach.
