Chloe had to admit she was nervous about this meeting. She didn't know what to expect, exactly since she had never met the man before. Which was the whole reason why she was there to begin with ( Read more... )

"I used to talk a lot about a war that was coming," he says thoughtfully after a moment's pause. "Most people took that to mean my people against your people. In reality, however, I was talking about a war that, even now, humanity is fighting with itself. And it will only get worse from here."

He falls silent for another moment and studies her before continuing. "I've seen this happen before. To my own people. And look where it got them. Both of our peoples rely on this planet's survival, and if we can help each other, I think we'll be able to live together peacefully."

"Why can't we simply live as equals?" She asks curiously, her eyes on his face, "your people fit in as much as we do now and just because you don't have powers, it doesn't mean you can't share your knowledge and help us make the planet better for both our races."

"I can share my knowledge without my powers, yes, but beyond that? I don't know how much I'll be able to do," he replies, meeting her gaze. "Telling them that they need to change to ensure their planet's survival is only part of it. The first step. Then I'll need to actually help them make those changes. And without my abilities, I can see no way I'll be able to do that."

"What kind of changes do you think need to be made?" She asks, leaning back against her chair, "and you shouldn't forget that Clark has his powers and I have no doubt he would want to help with anything he could."

"In addition to uniting humanity and sharing my warnings, my people and I would be able to do what Clark has been doing, except on a far greater scale," he tells her, resting his elbows on the table. "And while I'm sure that he would want to help, one Kryptonian with abilities cannot do nearly as much as an entire army of them. There is simply no comparison. I'm talking about global change here, and we need more than just Clark to make that happen."

"Don't take this wrong way," she warns him, leaning forward too, "but can you really trust all of your army not to abuse their powers? I've seen it happen to humans who had never had abilities before, power can go up to one's head quickly and when who is going to keep them under control?"

"I am," he says simply, meeting her gaze. "They will follow my lead, Miss Sullivan. They know I have their best interest at heart, and giving them powers and a purpose will only increase their loyalty to me. Those who abuse their abilities will be punished. I trust enough of my soldiers to make sure that happens."

"You are one man, Major and they are all over the planet, can you really keep track of everything all of them do at all times?" She narrowed her eyes slightly.

"Not personally, no. I can't be everywhere at once. But I do have soldiers I know I can trust. They can spread out; ensure no one behaves out of line," he says thoughtfully. "Some sort of specific system for that will be worked out later on. But in the meantime, my people will come together and unite under my command willingly. They are more devoted to me than you might realize."

Chloe just watches him as he speaks, he obviously seems confident in what he's saying, and from what she saw of the future, his soldiers did seem loyal to him. It's the peaceful attitude towards humans that she's not so sure about.

"And how far will your loyalty to us go? I understand that you are more familiar with our culture than the... older version of you seemed to be, but you will do what it takes to protect your soldiers and protect your race, if humans don't understand what you're trying to do and try to stop you, how long will you wait before you remove the barriers in order to get what is best for your men?"
