Fire in Paradise

The canyon caught fire and the town was literally at the mercy of the winds. Fires whip up and spread fast. Too fast. You can't outrun a fire if the wind is against you.
Makes you think, as everything does. I worked at the emergency center staffing a shelter for the weekend. This morning I went up to the library seeing burned foundations near the golf course, and tried to remember what was there. The canyon is white with burned brush, yet the oaks are kind of hunkered down, their mantles smoking but more or less intact to recover.
Most of the town are still evacuated. The town was at the brink of disaster. It reminds you that nature as quixotic as ever, is a faithless lover. Never to be trusted or depended on.
