I don't know if people know this, but 'to card fingers through' something, be it hair or whatever, really is 'card' and comes from the practice of carding yarn to get it ready for spinning. I.e. the raw wool is combed through between two paddles that have wire teeth sticking up (they look like large cat brushes, actually) and you kind of work the wool between them (there's a specific process, but you see what I mean) to straighten out the fibers and get them into more manageable shape for spinning.
