WEEK ONE, THURSDAY
It starts off as a bet. Can Kyuhyun beat Hyukjae at claw machines? Now they’re in the arcade with Kyuhyun’s furiously burning competitive streak flaming through his eyes. Hyukjae sighs, wondering what he’s gotten into.
“Come on…Just a little more… DAMN IT!” Kyuhyun shouts, kicking the machine only to hop around on one foot a moment later. Hyukjae laughs, a can’t help himself from teasing the younger about not being able to get a simple bunny toy.
“C’mon Kyuhyun, just admit you lost the best,” He says, crossing his arms with a smirk, “And besides, we better get home before your mom has another panic attack.” He turns around then, only to see a boy with light brown hair standing in front of a claw machine no different from the one Kyuhyun is swearing at. The boy is their age, Hyukjae is sure of it, but he looks younger. Hyukjae also notices that the boy is looking at a blue and green fish stuffed animal. He frowns slightly at this and turns around, wondering why he felt sad that the boy isn’t able to get what he wants.
“Not yet,” Kyuhyun replies as Hyukjae sighs. He sees the other fish out more quarters and insert them into the claw machine, continuously going at it. He decides to go get a thai iced tea with boba to wait for the other boy, and even when he gets back after waiting thirty minutes in line, Kyuhyun is still going at it. Hyukjae takes a sip of his Thai iced tea, sucking up some boba while watching the younger slam his fist into the machine before him.
Suddenly, his phone makes a ding! sound, and Hyukjae flips his phone open to see a text from his older sister.
From: Sora
To: Hyuk
Were r u?! mom’s pacing!
Hyukjae sighs, taking another swig of his Thai iced tea before turning around.
“Hey Kyu, I gotta go. My sister just texted me and said my mom is about to make a trench in the-and you don’t care, okay bye now,” Hyukjae sees no response from the younger boy as he turns to leave, wondering when and if he’ll be able to see that boy from earlier.
WEEK TWO, SATURDAY
“Kyu, seriously, when are you going to give it up?” Hyukjae turns around to look at the young who is pushing the couch away from the wall. Thanks to a friend, Kyuhyun had learned about how many coins are underneath the couches in the karaoke place. Therefore, almost every week on a Saturday after Ahra - Kyuhyun’s sister - manages to drag him away from the claw machine, Kyuhyun would sneak back out at night to come hang out here with Hyukjae, Kangin, Kangin’s boyfriend Jungsu, Hyukjae’s best friend, Junsu, and Junsu’s boyfriend Yoochun.
Hyukjae sighs as he reaches into his pocket to pull out six dollars worth of quarters he had found the night before when he went with his sister and a bunch of her friends. Kyuhyun pushed his pile towards the center of the table, making about thirty two dollars and sixty three cents.
“There’s that much money under the couches?” Hyukjae asks after they had finished counting them. Kyuhyun shakes his head.
“I found, like, ten dollars worth down there. The rest are from Jongwoon and Ryeowook,” Kyuhyun smirks, sitting back in the chair.
“That’s hyung to you, Kyuhyun. Jongwoon hyung,” Jongwoon interjects; however, the maknae of the group merely shrugs off the death glare that is boring holes into him. Hyukjae wonders why Kyuhyun is the only one who can resist that glare. He deems it unfair.
“So…Today, we made thirty somethin’ dollars and some cents. You’re gonna use it all for the claw machine?” Hyukjae questions, staring at Kyuhyun straight in the eyes. Kyuhyun just shrugs.
“I won the bet three days ago, but I wanna see how far I can take this. I wanna see how long it takes before that waiter guy notices,” Kyuhyun crosses his legs, throwing his arms back on the sofa.
“You mean the one who was watching us two weeks ago?” Hyukjae scrunches his nose up, “That guy looks like a girl.”
“He’s cute.”
“I really don’t get your taste, man,” Hyukjae sighs, throwing his feet up on top of the table.
“Yo! Don’t do that! We don’t want the food tasting like what your feet smell!” Youngwoon - or rather Kangin - shouts, shoving his legs off. Hyukjae bursts into a fit of laughter, as well as the rest of the ones in the room.
~*~*~
Later that night, as Hyukjae walks home from the karaoke, he decides to drop by the arcade since it was only ten and the arcade was open until midnight. He passes by the claw machine with the smirking pink bunny that Kyuhyun had failed to get the first day, and sees that guy with the brown hair again. He’s staring at the blue and green stuffed fish…like last time.
He sees the boy fingering a quarter, but before he could put it in to play, a guy who looks like this boy’s twin appears.
“Yah! Donghae! Hurry up before mom freaks on us!” The other calls, and the boy is forced to pry his eyes away from the fish as he runs after the guy.
“Okay, hyung!”
Donghae… Hyukjae files that away so he’ll remember. He smiles to himself. It’s a cute name, and very befitting for the boy because of his apparent fondness with the fish toy.
WEEK THREE, SATURDAY
“Kyu, I swear your butt is bigger than my sister’s,” Hyukjae mumbles, face-palming as he sees Kyuhyun’s butt in his face as he reaches under the couch to find more quarters.
“Well you better get a good look because you ain’t gonna get any butt this nice in your face like this ever again,” Kyuhyun says loudly over the music and Hyukjae swears that if it weren’t for Jungsu - the protective “umma” of the group watching him carefully - he would’ve killed Kyuhyun right there on the spot.
“Anyway…I think I’m gonna leave early today,” Hyukjae says, sighing slightly as he picks up his coat.
“Where are you going? The night hasn’t even begun!” Youngwoon calls, shaking a beer in the air.
Hyukjae just rolls his eyes and says, “You know I don’t drink hyung, and I’ve got a date~”
“A date?!” This caught the whole room’s attention.
“Yep, but it’s a secret~ Bye!” Hyukjae makes a mad dash for the door, just as Jungsu jumps over the table.
“YAH! LEE HYUKJAE, YOU BETTER GET YOUR ASS BACK HERE AND EXPLAIN TO ME RIGHT NOW!” He hears Jungsu yell, but he’s too far down the hall to turn back now.
“SORRY HYUNG, BUT LITTLE HYUKKIE’S GROWIN’ UP!” He calls back, smirking as he did so.
~*~*~
By the time he comes to a stop by the arcade, he sees the back of Donghae’s head going around the corner. His heart sinks a little, seeing the other leave before he had even gotten there. However, he pulls out six dollars worth of quarters and makes a determinedly goes over to the claw machine.
He notes Kyuhyun’s new crush leaving as he inserts one quarter…and another…and another…and another until he runs out and it’s around ten at night. He sighs, and thanks God for the fact that it’s Saturday, so he doesn’t have to have Sora on his back.
Hyukjae sighs, though, as he looks at the empty prize slot. He wasn’t able to get the fish.
WEEK SIX, SUNDAY
This entire week, Kyuhyun is moping because they’ve been to the arcade for the last two days and Sungmin - as they have now learned the waiter guy’s name - was nowhere to be found.
Hyukjae sighs. He knows how it’s like for the younger. He had found out that on Sundays and Mondays, Donghae doesn’t come to the arcade.
Those two days feel like the longest days of the week to him.
WEEK SEVEN, SUNDAY
Kyuhyun is stuck at home studying for an English test, because of all the subjects Kyuhyun is a genius at, he just plain sucks at English. Ryeowook and Jongwoon are on another one of their dates. Junsu and Yoochun were meeting up with four other friends. Youngwoon and Jungsu is having a study-date together because Youngwoon failed his test, so Jungsu is helping him, but Hyukjae knows that that will somehow end up a little…naughty and sticky. Then Donghee or Shindong as he liked most people to call him - one of the crowd Hyukjae hangs out with, and the only straight one - is out with his girlfriend for her birthday.
And then there’s Hyukjae. He has one thing on mind today, and he decides to do exactly what he had in mind.
Go to the arcade.
It isn’t because he’s addicted to a game or anything. It’s because he’s addicted to a person. He feels like he’s become a stalker, because he now knows the drink Donghae orders every time he’s there, and he also knows Donghae’s routine at the arcade. Eat, drink, DDR for an hour straight going against either his brother - which was the guy who had called for him that one day - or another guy with bleached hair and a scar near his left eye, then finally, spend a ridiculous amount of time just staring at the fish plush.
Hyukjae is attracted yet mystified by this character, and he wants to do something for him. No, he doesn’t want to just do something, he wants to get that stuffed animal for him. And that is what he is determined to do as Donghae leaves for the day - at seven. Always seven.
As he steps into the arcade, he goes straight over to the claw machine. He notices the guy Kyuhyun is infatuated with standing there, and Hyukjae knows that he is looking at him. However, his shoulders suddenly slump out of disappointment. Hyukjae notes it and files the memory away. So the waiter guy wanted to see Kyuhyun, huh?
Once he’s sure Donghae is gone, he walks up to the claw machine and puts in a quarter…
WEEK TEN, SATURDAY
Hyukjae gets up to leave as soon as Ryeowook and Jongwoon finish their duet. Kyuhyun watches him as he packs his bag. He waves goodbye to everyone and leaves quickly; however, he hears the door open after.
“Yah,” Kyuhyun calls.
“It’s hyung. What do you want, Kyuhyun?” Hyukjae turns his head, checking his watch. If he runs, he’ll be able to see Donghae for at least fifteen minutes before the other has to leave.
“I know you like someone,” Kyuhyun says casually, and Hyukjae whips around all the way. “It’s that brunette who’s always staring at the blue and green stuffed fish, isn’t it?”
“How…?”
“I just know things…hyung,” Kyuhyun smirks and Hyukjae just stares. “You better hurry if you don’t wanna miss him.”
And just like that, Hyukjae is tearing down the hall.
WEEK THIRTEEN, SATURDAY/SUNDAY
It’s two in the morning, and Hyukjae had only been sleeping for about two hours because he had been going at it like crazy with the coin collecting at the karaoke, then dropped by the last half hour the arcade was open to try and win that fish. Therefore, when his phone rings, and he’s forced to wake up to answer it…you can tell that he isn’t a very happy monkey.
“What. In. The. Name. Of. Shisus. Do. You. Want. At. TWO FREAKIN’ AM IN THE MORNING?!” Hyukjae growls, angry at whoever the hell it was disrupting his sleep.
“Whoa, grouchy,” He hears Kyuhyun’s voice on the other end, and he groans.
“What do you want?”
“I got Sungmin to go on a date with me. Consider me and him officially dating,” Hyukjae could practically see the smirk on the other’s face as he tiredly rolls over.
“Yeah whatever… Go to sleep,” Hyukjae mumbles and snaps the phone shut.
However, not even two minutes later, an idea strikes him. If Kyuhyun and Sungmin are finally dating…and Sungmin has the keys to the claw machines… Hyukjae shoots straight up in bed and pulls his phone out, calling Kyuhyun back.
“KYU!”
“Yeah, I know. You want me to ask Sungmin if he can open the claw machine. I get it.”
“I LOVE YOU MAN!”
“…Just…no. Bye.”
WEEK FOURTEEN, THURSDAY
“Here,” Hyukjae smiles broadly, showing his gums as Sungmin hands him the fish toy. He is answered by a cute smile from Sungmin. “Good luck.”
“Thanks Sungmin-sshi,” Hyukjae bows ninety degrees at the smaller man before turning around and walking off to hide around the corner. He watches his watch, waiting until four in the afternoon when he knows Donghae will show.
Therefore, he stands and watches until he sees Donghae come in and go through his daily routine until he finally comes upon the claw machine. Hyukjae watches carefully as Donghae looks up at the claw machine with a smile…until he realizes the fish isn’t there. A pout which soon turns into a frown and tears appear. Hyukjae takes this as his cue as he walks casually out.
By now, Donghae is covering his face with his hands, hiding his tears. Hyukjae leans against the claw machine casually.
“I didn’t mean to make you cry. I just thought I’d get it for you,” Hyukjae says, looking over to the teary brunette who looks at him in shock as he holds out the fish stuffed animal. “Here…for you.” Hyukjae smiles at Donghae who looks confusedly at the other.
“B-but…You…do I know you?” He hears Donghae stutter, and Hyukjae has to admit that Donghae is cuter up close.
“No, but I’d like to get to know you,” Hyukjae pushes the fish into Donghae’s hands. He holds on to it, hugging it tightly to his chest.
Donghae smiles broadly. He quickly wipes his tears with his sleeves as he holds out a hand.
“I’m Donghae. But my friends call me Fishy or Hae,” He introduces himself and Hyukjae smiles back.
“Hyukjae. It’s a pleasure meeting you.”
WEEK FOURTEEN, SATURDAY
Hyukjae takes Donghae’s hand and leads the other boy to the ice cream stand in the park, buying a strawberry for himself and chocolate for Donghae. Donghae gratefully takes it as he eats the ice cream happily, looking like a little kid. Hyukjae eats his ice cream slowly, watching the adorable brunette.
“Hyung!” Hyukjae turns around to see Kyuhyun walking hand in hand with Sungmin. Hyukjae smiles at the two.
“Hey Kyu,” Hyukjae greets and Donghae looks up from his chocolate ice cream to see them coming up. He shyly hides behind Hyukjae whose smile got wider unconsciously.
“So this is the famous Hyukjae-stealing Donghae,” Kyuhyun jokes and Sungmin pouts, swatting the youngest on the arm. He laughs and tilts his head slightly, getting a better look at Donghae, “I’m Kyuhyun. The one Hyukjae probably complains the most about. And this is my boyfriend, Sungmin.”
“Hi, Donghae-sshi,” Sungmin waves at the shy eighteen year old hiding behind Hyukjae.
Donghae bows slightly, but remains quiet as he sticks his tongue out slightly. His eyes remain on the ground.
“Hey, we were thinking about hitting a movie later. Wanna come with us? Dinner’s on me after the movie,” Kyuhyun says, fishing out a handful of quarters. Sungmin laughs and Hyukjae does too. Kyuhyun joins in and pretty soon, Donghae starts laughing quietly.
Hyukjae turned to look at Donghae, laughing so hard he was nearly crying and Sungmin who was pouting while trying to suppress his laughter.
And to think what brought them all together was a simple claw machine game.
