She halted at the sandy shoreline with fatigue quickly catching up to her. Seira took in a deep breath and fell to her knees. The cool sea water felt nice against her sweat-covered body. She looked to her side, where Tarian was standing. His hand still held a grip on hers.

“Tarian, you can let go now…” She announced.

“Oh, sorry.” With that, the boy did let go of her hand and turned his back to her. “Seira, I was going to tell you something this morning, but your cousin interrupted us.”

Seira froze, just noticing the situation. She was alone with him again! Twice in one day, how awkward, she thought to herself. Shaking that thought out of her mind, she cupped her two hands together and placed them in the sea to gather water to splash her face with.

“What was it?” She asked.

“Your mother didn’t die from illness,” Tarian spoke, “Lamia Der Macht was murdered.”

“What?!” She shrieked, shaking her head violently. Slowly, she moved away from him. It couldn’t be true. He was wrong. Tears began to streak down her cheeks and blurred her vision of his sad face. “You’re lying to me! Stop lying!”

“I’m not lying, Seira! You have to listen to me!” Tarian shouted back, stepping forward.

Hanging her head, Seira covered her ears. She didn’t want to hear it anymore. “Just shut up, Tarian! Shut up! Stop talking! Stop lying!”

“Seira!” The guy in front of her yelled.

Before she knew it, there was a flash of red as Tarian’s rushing form pushed her down. She heard him grunt in pain as she crashed to the ground with him on top of her. A huge blush appeared on her face as she struggled to move under Tarian’s weight. “Why’d you…?”

Her voice trailed off when she spotted a glass shard tinted with bloodstains stuck at his side. She gasped, now looking from the bleeding spot to his pained face. “I would have warned you, but words are too slow for me.”

“I see you found a girl to hit on.” Upon hearing this, the duo lying on the beach turned to see Richard, holding two glass shards in each hand. Tarian groaned as he slowly got up, holding his side. Seira quickly followed, placing a hand on Tarian to keep him balanced as he carefully stood his ground. They both glared at the newcomer.

“I’m not hitting on her, Richie.” Tarian spat.

Seira then assumed these two were close, judging from the way they were arguing. She thought them to be either brothers or cousins. Who knew? She sure didn’t.

“Looked like it to me.” Richard replied with slight laughter in his voice.

“He wasn’t.” Seira snapped, butting into their conversation.

Richard gazed at her. His expression was indifferent as he spoke to her. “So the daughter of Lamia speaks up at last. I wonder what she’ll think if I say-”

“Be quiet, Richie!” Tarian ordered.

“You don’t boss me around.” Richard argued.

“I have the damn authority to.” The other countered, but the newcomer with dirty-blond hair was smirking.

“You may have that damned authority, but I have some stuff up my sleeve that your little miss doesn’t-” He was taunting Tarian, but Seira could do nothing to stop this. It was not her business at all.

“I would be silent if I were you.” The boy at Seira’s side hissed.

“And if you don’t want her to get hurt, you better get your ass over here.” Richard announced bluntly. At this, Seira lifted her eyes, seeing the seriousness of the situation as of now. Her right hand lifted to her heart as her left stayed at her side, unmoving until Tarian took it into his and kissed the back of her palm. Again, Seira blushed deeply.

“I’m sorry to have gotten you involved in all this.” He whispered, “I hope we meet again with different circumstances…”

With that, his hand let go of hers. With her heart sinking, Seira watched his back as he walked away from her ever so slowly. She bit her lip as he disappeared behind Richard. She wouldn’t cry. She barely even knew him anyway, but still it hurt to say one thing.

“Goodbye.” She whispered as the wind blew by. Now, it was just her and Richard. Her sad expression melted into an apathetic one as their gazes locked. She folded her arms while she shifted her weight from one side to the other.

“Usually, he wouldn’t walk away so easily, you know.” The other boy stated as he turned his back on her. Seira bit her lip harder, trying to control her anger as Richard began to walk away.

“I think Tarian’s grown attached to you so I apologize for this,” He lifted his right hand, “Send your cousin my admission of guilt as well.”

“What?” Seira coughed out.

Before she could get her answer, she was struck first in the gut and then, kicked in the chest. Seira gaped at Richard’s fading form as she fell backward. Unconsciousness was beckoning to her, but she welcomed it without a fight.
