It was risky. Alasdaira knew this, but her daughter had a look of determination in her blue eyes. Elpida was not likely to give up when she had put her mind into it. Elpida was not the kind of young woman to sit around and wait. She used to be, but not now.

“Are you sure, my daughter? You do not even know who your father has chosen to be your betrothed. Even I had the liberty of meeting and getting to know who was chosen for me.”

Elpida shook her head. She had no choice. Her mother Alasdaira was dying. Soon, Elpida would take her place as their matriarch and would be burdened with the power. She would have to become a mother herself.

“Mother, I am sure.” She hoped Alasdaira would not ask again.

Heavy footsteps reached their chamber. Elpida recognized them as the footsteps of her father and maybe one of her brothers accompanying him. She closed her eyes and turned away from her mother, only to be surprised. Her father had come, but he had brought a guest. His familiar features had slapped her across her face. His paler complexion and his pale-blue eyes would have caused her to spot him in a crowd anywhere.

“You.” The word was barely a whisper, but everyone could see the shock across her face. Her arms had folded up over her chest. Her hands were gripping her elbows. Their eyes were locked onto each other. The atmosphere grew tense as Alasdaira and her husband looked between the two.

“I take it you two have met once before, Earl of Illiyen.”

It was a statement, not a question from Elpida’s father. Elpida swallowed before dropping to curtsey. It was only polite. He followed suit with a bow. Neither looked comfortable. However, if her parents left them alone now, she would have a few words for him.

“I’m afraid so, Father.” Elpida looked away from everyone. Feeling their gaze upon her, she felt the need to elaborate. “We met on Hallowed Eve shortly before the Dasal was performed. Earl Lelouch was accompanying his acquaintances. I believe it was the Prince Helios Nox who introduced us.”

“Why did you not inform us?”

“Lucifel interrupted the Lady Seraph and Mother’s Dasal,” Elpida glanced at Lelouch, whose expression betrayed everything. He had longed to see her again. “I believed he was among those who lost their lives that day.”
