Truth

It's 9:30 eastern standard time as I listen very intently to a conversation that is going on behind me. I SHOULD be writing my essay on meditation that is due tomorrow, but the debate silently going on behind me, as we are in the library, is far more interesting. I'm 13 pages in, anyway. That is WAY more than the 10-page minimum, so I feel like I've earned this privilege.

Basically, it's a religious kid and a non-religious kid. I think that they are both freshmen because of how they sound, and the vocabulary they use. In any case, the religious kid has stereotypically never done drugs, never drank alcohol and is a virgin. The non-religious kid is the opposite of the religious kid in those three categories. This debate began as a result of a discussion about one of their friends named 'Justin' who has recently turned to faith- more accurately Christianity.

From there, they embarked upon a metaphysical and controversial journey of the classic God vs. science, materialism vs. dualism and faith vs. logic/reason challenges. I am having a blast eavesdropping on this discussion because it proves to me that there is still something inherently good in this world. They are both in pursuit of The Truth. The religious kid has his faith in God to guide him to the answers of Life, and the non-religious guy has his mind set on logic and science and other such means to take him to the eventual solution. Both sides have good points. Both sides have weak points. At times I was so tempted to jump in and give my opinion about what both of them are conversing. I'll give an example...

Non religious kid asked, "How can you believe so much in something that isn't even proven?"
Religious kid replied, "I know it to be true. It's my faith."
Obviously not satisfied with this answer, non-religious kid responded, "But that's just a feeling. How do you know that your faith is the right one,or even that religion in general is the answer at all?"
Religious guy calmly answered back, "All we need it faith. I know that this is the way to get to the truth. It makes the most sense to me."

Both of them presented good ideas that at times I found myself indifferent upon. But I still smiled nonetheless when non-religious kid asked religious kid a question he couldn't even answer, or when religious kid gave an answer to non-religious kid that he couldn't entire understand.

So yes... the Truth. What is the ultimate Truth in Life? Is there such a thing as something that is unilaterally indisputably verifiably true? We may never know. Perhaps we ascertain the Answer right before we die. Or perhaps there is an answer in some kind of an afterlife when the theoretical soul is finally released from its corporal restraints. I came close to the answer once... I think. But I am unsure of how to interpret the information that I was presented. I'm not sure it actually happened.
All that I do know, is that I'm not leaving this library until this conversation is over!

'til next time-
Bryan
