Wednesday afternoon
Swanson was very proud of her boys and girls. This afternoon Unit had showed it's ugly face. And been dealt with.
Martha and Gwen were seated at the table going over the papers that had been collected from all over the floor of The Hub. Everything had to be properly filed and labeled, or Ianto would be...oh.
The rest of them were sweeping up fallen debris and dirt, because they knew that all the archives were going to have to be pulled out of the rooms below and brought up here to be crated and shipped off to Glasgow. A tidy work space would be needed.
And suddenly a crowd of black uniforms was in the space, swanking about as if they owned it. There was a Commander something or other, waving about sheets of paper, telling them all to cease and desist. Unit was in charge here, they would be taking everything, now who had the keys to the archives and the entry codes to Mainframe?
Gwen and Martha rose to their feet, not one bit frightened or humbled. Enraged, yes. Swanson flicked her eyes around. Oh yes, a room full of very angry coppers, their hands casually set on their side arms. There had been desperate calls made to Unit over the last 6 months, begging for help. Calls which were ignored and never returned. And plenty of dead or injured as a result.
Swanson abruptly yanked the papers out of the blustering commander's hand. Not even looking at them she ripped them up and dropped the pieces. " Commander, I think you will find if you check in with Miss Spears of the Home Office, that this is in fact a City of Cardiff jurisdiction. Ms. Cooper and I are running this operation."
Gwen stepped forward, her eyes glittering with hate. " I know what you're after. All the programs that Tosh created, all the work done by Torchwood down through the past two centuries. You will have none of it. Your murderous plot got you nothing, and now the world knows what Unit is capable of. We were supposed to be on the same side!"
The Commander wasn't done yet. " This is a top secret institution, and you have brought unauthorized civilians here. I can have you all clapped into cells and make sure you never see the light of day again!"
Martha sighed heavily. "Stupid man, look around you. Gwen Cooper is what's left of Torchwood 3, she gets to say who is authorized and who isn't. And right now you lot are definitely not authorized to be here. And another thing, I'm a Companion. That's right, the Doctor comes by from time to time to check in with me. And he better be able to find me. They don't call him The Oncoming Storm for nothing."
Andy and the rest of the coppers herded the Unit people out of the cavern and out through the entrance tunnel. Swanson went with them. She wanted a quiet word with the Commander.
Swanson jerked her head towards the tunnel, encouraging the others to scat. Then she addressed the Commander. In a low voice she told him how the Cardiff police had all read the reports in the paper about what Unit had been up to during the 456 business. How they knew that Unit had let jealousy rule their handling of the government's illegal demands for destroying Torchwood. And how all the coppers knew that Unit's ignoring Cardiff's calls for help had led to needless civilian and police deaths. Unofficially of course, Swanson had heard that various members of the SWAT team had decided it was open season on anything wearing a black uniform. So to avoid any sad mistakes, maybe the Commander could pack up his team and get the Hell out of her city right now, hmmmm?
The Commander glared at her, fuming. Then he called out to his men loitering around their trucks to get a move on, they were going back to London.
Swanson watched the cluster of trucks swoosh off, trying to get to London before Cardiff SWAT found out that they were here. She sighed, nodded. A job well done. She turned smartly on her heel. Back to work!
