Yes the hoax perputrated agaisnt the Jews was one of the most successful in history. You will be sent to the east to be resettled. Some even paid for their own fares. Right up to teh point they were led into showers with stone soap was the hope they would survive.

Elie Wiese book 'Night' who was a Hungarian Jew talks about how someone came back to tell them about what was going on and they thought him mad and his terrible tale discounted.

The disbeielf has to be set against thousands of years of hatred and the tale. It sounds unbeliveable, you take people away on trains and then kill them, it makes no sense. And it still doesen't its too horrible to contemplate. We know different today but the scale was unimaginable to wipe out thousands of thousands of small communities systematically.

Jews often went with the flow, things might be bad now but will settle down best to stay and keep our heads down. The bent with the wind and surived unfortunalety this was not a wind they could survie.
