I do so envy those people who have come up with music playlists for their gods. It always seemed like a really good idea, but try as I might I've just not been able to do it myself
( Read more... )
I have made play lists before for some things - music can get tied into my creative process and I used to have play lists for stories I was writing (or thinking about writing, and if we're counting thinking about writing I suppose I have one now :-)). That was one reason why I thought it might be easy, but maybe that's just different. Of course the kind of shit I write goes along well with the kind of shit I listen to, the connection is easy to make. Maybe I file Hermes in some different place where I can't connect him to it?
that has stuff like Drowning Pool, Slipknot, and Rammstein
Ah, now you never mention liking music like that (well except Rammstein, that I knew), or I might have asked. :-) Like I said in my other entry, if I don't think people will care or be interested I tend not to share, and there is a reason why of all things I take some enjoyment in, music is the thing I discuss the least (I had a tag here already so it must have come up at some point, but not often and probably not in much detail). Because it seems I listen to stuff 95% of the population can't stand and doesn't consider "music" so unless I find out our tastes cross somewhere I tend to keep it entirely to myself (and even then I limit it to where those tastes cross). Hell, if I came up with a play list for Hermes I probably wouldn't share it at all, not here or anywhere else. I know I'm nuts, but that's just the way it is.
Yeah, I like those bands (well, original Drowning Pool, from back before the lead singer died and was replaced, I never heard anything after that so can't say what I think of it). So if you do have anything to recommend, we'll stick to that and suggest away. :-) (in email if you would prefer)
Well, I'll give it a shot. Honestly, I like more industrial than metal or hard rock, and am fairly stuck in 90's industrial to boot (NIN, Ministry, etc.), but here are a few random things:
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - hard to describe, they are sort of artsy, sort of metal... Check out "Helpless Corpses Enactment" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELyco68w5ks
"Want" by Disturbed - I'm sure you're familiar with the band, but have you heard that song in particular? Quite appropriate for many of us, I bet. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jR0TC3m4uqw)
"Counting Bodies Like Sheep" by Perfect Circle - again, you probably know the band, but this song is less well-known. And I could see it on a Hermes mix, personally. (http://www.youtube.com/watch#!v=g9AxVoG04ng - ignore the visual part, I just wanted to find the song for you)
Rob Zombie - "More Human Than Human" is on one spirit mix, and "Return of the Phantom Stranger" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QcKxMoJB4L0)is on my daimon mix (come to think of it, the lyrics to that one could easily apply to Hermes)
System of a Down - "Spiders", "Question!", and pretty much everything on the album "Toxicity"
Tool - "Parabol/Parabola" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiV_ue-PbL4 (starts off slow in teh first part, but gets going, and to me is all about relationships with spirits and gods, although I'm sure that's not what they meant)
All the music that I like could be classified somewhere between hard rock and metal; I honestly can't remember all the hundreds of little distinctions in sub genres within. Since the 90s was when I was listening to music a lot more than I am now, a good deal of what I do like probably comes out of there.
But anyway:
Sleepytime Gorrilla Museum: Ha, awesome name. I liked this, will listen to more. :-)
Disturbed's Want - I have their first album so I've heard that one. You're right, that does work.
Counting Bodies Like Sheep - This one not so much. (WTF video? gods, I hate how everyone on Youtube thinks they can make a music video)
More Human Than Human - I like that song, but could never have it on a spiritual playlist. I've seen it use so often on movie previews and commercials that my mind will only associate it with John Woo-esque action films. :-P
Return of the Phantom Stranger - I fucking love this song, it was my favorite off Hellbilly Delux. As a general rule I love music that sounds like it came out of a horror movie, like most of Rob Zombie's stuff, or Cradle of Filth which has been my favorite band for the last year or so. :-)
System of a Down - Spiders is a great song. And anything off Toxicity.
For some reason, I didn't think to look at Tool. Now that I am thinking about it, I bet there is a ton of appropriate stuff there.
No kidding, huh? We probably have about five songs we like in common and other than that we don't listen to music together.
I know her mother made a very big deal out of that after meeting me, like our divergent music and movie (though there is more in common there) tastes meant we had nothing in common at all. I don't get it, not a very big deal to me. :-p
