The Devotional Calendar, or draft one of it anyway

Jul 17, 2009 08:56

In between my sleeping like shit and running around to get various errands done, I did manage, with some suggestions from Hermes and help from Renee, to get a first draft festival calendar down for the upcoming lunar month. Yes, I do want to try operating on the lunar schedule, because i do see a certain amount of power in doing so and because, I ( Read more... )

This looks like a really good setup for you - not too few, not too many days. I like scheduling in your "lazy days" like that, making them deliberate. Sort of like how I gave myself a "summer vacation" this year because I knew I'd probably not get anything done anyway, and this way I can try to just relax rather than stressing.

I'm glad to see someone else using the lunar calendar. It means a lot to me on a gut level, but very few others seem to resonate with that. My suggestion is that you either make your own little calendar with all these dates on it (as I do), or write in the dates on a regular calendar, and keep that somewhere you will see every day, to help remind you.

I need not focus entirely on semi formal mini rituals, that perhaps trying instead to come up with meaningful activities on certain days might be a lot less overwhelming for me and easier to maintain

Yes! I certainly don't do even semi-formal ritual on every single monthly holy day (maybe I will someday, but it's a process). Sure, on some of those days I do ritual or even trancework, but what I *always* do is some kind of little action(s) that will both remind me of the god/spirit in question, and show my devotion. So that includes things like: wearing certain colors, jewelry and perfumes, making small offerings on their shrines (flowers I just picked, a libation, a bit of special food), lighting candles and incense on their shrine and keeping the candle lit the whole time I'm in the house so that I'm constantly seeing it, playing music that reminds me of them, reading about them, reciting a hymn, doing activities associated with them, etc.

The other thing I've done is made a little booklet for myself of each god I honor in this way, and all the ideas I've had for things to do, offerings to make, etc. That way, when I'm feeling too tired or distracted and can't seem to recall anything to do, I can just flip to their page and pick from a list.

Good luck with all of this!

Thanks, it is good to know the set up looks as good to others as it does to me. I'm semi hopeful about this one. :-)

The Lazy Days seemed very obviously important after it was pointed out to me. If I'm having a problem with shit like that for a great number of different reasons, it would probably be better to allow myself to have the time, rather than let myself take it anyway, way too often, then feel like crap about it. Plus, like Siggy said, can't be all work and no play all the time, cranky Gavin isn't fun for anyone. :-P

There has been a part of me that wanted to use it for some time, because the arguments people like you have made do resonate with me. I didn't because of my hard time keeping track of time, it would just be one more thing to add on to the plate and if I can't remember the basics why complicate things further? Recently (perhaps with a little Help) I've just had to admit I'm kind of in my own timezone, like it or not, and I've stopped worrying too much about others' views much beyond days of the week (and barring certain things like first of the month when rent is due, even then Renee usually has to remind me). In the respect, the lunar calendar might be easier, like I said night and day are things I can follow and I can easily see the moon changing better than trying to keep track of arbitrary calendar dates.

Though I'll take your advice and made sure its carefully written down, bought a day planner for that very purpose.

Also some good ideas about things to do for these days, and the god booklets (I am really so very bad about recording the stuff I need to, I never was the journaling type despite how much I always loved writing, I really need to get better at that). Thanks.
